Day 1: The Golden Circle
Morning
Leave early for Thingvellir National Park, 45km and about an hour from Reykjavik, a UNESCO site (background via Visit Iceland ) where the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is visible on foot, and where Iceland’s parliament first met in 930. Walk the Almannagja gorge before the tour buses arrive.
Afternoon
Push on to Geysir, another hour past Thingvellir, where Strokkur erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, reliably enough to plan lunch around it. Gullfoss waterfall sits ten minutes further north, a two-tier drop into a canyon that is worth the short walk from the parking area in any weather.
Evening
Drive back into Reykjavik, roughly 90 minutes from Gullfoss with no traffic, and save your energy for a real dinner downtown. The whole loop runs 230km and 6 to 8 hours with stops, entirely on paved road, no 4x4 needed.
Day 2: Blue Lagoon and Reykjanes Peninsula
Morning
The Blue Lagoon sits on the Reykjanes Peninsula near Grindavik, 50km and 40 minutes from the city (just 23km and 20 minutes from Keflavik Airport, which makes it a natural fit if your flight leaves later today). Afternoon
Spend 2 to 3 hours in the lagoon itself, then take a short drive to the Bridge Between Continents nearby, a small but genuine photo op standing over the rift between two tectonic plates. Evening
Head back into Reykjavik for a final dinner, or straight to Keflavik if this is a departure day, the airport is only 20 minutes from the lagoon itself.
Is Two Days Really Enough for Iceland?
Enough for the two trips most people fly here for, not enough for the whole country. Two days gets you the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon properly, without rushing either. Fill the rental car’s tank before both drives out. Fuel stations get sparse fast once you are past Reykjavik’s edge, and a low tank is a worse surprise on a foreign road than it sounds.
