3 Days in Surabaya: A First-Timer Plan

Day 1
Morning: Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) and the 10 November Museum beneath it, then Hotel Majapahit’s Art Deco lobby a short walk away.
Lunch: Rawon at a stall near Tunjungan (roughly Rp 25,000-40,000), Surabaya’s signature black beef soup.
Afternoon: The House of Sampoerna museum, if currently open, for the city’s kretek-industry history and its vintage Rolls-Royce on display.
Evening: Dinner and a walk down Jalan Tunjungan, past the grand Dutch-era shopfronts. Tip: buy your Bromo jeep tour today if you haven’t already, same-day bookings can miss the best shared-jeep slots.
Day 2
Morning: The Arab Quarter around Sunan Ampel Mosque, dress modestly, and browse the market lanes selling dates, perfume, and prayer goods.
Lunch: Rujak cingur near Chinatown (roughly Rp 20,000-35,000, verify), the bold cow-snout and petis salad that’s a genuine Surabaya specialty.
Afternoon: Chinatown’s Kya-Kya lanes on Kembang Jepun, and the old Jembatan Merah (Red Bridge) district nearby.
Evening: A final city dinner, lontong balap or sate klopo if you haven’t tried them yet. Tip: get to bed early, Bromo pickup tomorrow is typically around midnight to 1am.
Day 3
Morning: An overnight-style Bromo run: midnight pickup, a 3-4 hour drive to Cemoro Lawang, and a 4WD jeep to Penanjakan for sunrise over the Sea of Sand.
Midday: Walk down to the crater rim, about 45 minutes each way, then start the drive back toward Surabaya.
Afternoon: Arrive back in the city by mid-afternoon; rest before an evening flight or an early departure tomorrow.
Evening: A relaxed final dinner near your hotel. Tip: bring a warm layer for the viewpoint, it’s genuinely cold at 2,770 meters before dawn even though Surabaya itself never cools down.
