Turkmenistan 4-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Ashgabat
Morning
- Arrive in Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan
- Check-in to your hotel and freshen up
- Visit the Neutrality Arch, a 95m tall monument dedicated to the country’s independence
Afternoon
- Explore the National Museum of Turkmenistan, which showcases the country’s history and culture
- Walk through the Palace of Turkmenbashi, a grandiose structure built in honor of the former president
Evening
- Enjoy a traditional Turkmen dinner at a local restaurant
- Take a stroll along the Ashgabat Boulevard, lined with modern buildings and monuments
Things to Know
- Ashgabat is known for its lavish architecture, marble-clad buildings, and gold-domed mosques
- The city is relatively safe, but be respectful of local customs and dress modestly
Day 2: Darvaza Gas Crater
Morning
- Drive to Darvaza Gas Crater, a natural gas field that has been burning continuously since 1971 ( approx. 3 hours)
- Take in the breathtaking views of the crater, especially during sunset
Afternoon
- Explore the surrounding desert landscape and take a camel ride (optional)
- Enjoy a picnic lunch in the middle of nowhere!
Evening
- Return to Ashgabat and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant
- Relax at your hotel or explore the city’s night markets
Things to Know
- The Darvaza Gas Crater is an otherworldly experience, but be prepared for a long drive on rough roads
- Bring sunscreen, hats, and water to protect yourself from the harsh desert sun
Day 3: Nisa Fortress & Anau Fortress
Morning
- Visit Nisa Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ancient Parthian city (approx. 1 hour)
- Explore the fortress’s ruins and take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside
Afternoon
- Drive to Anau Fortress, another ancient settlement with well-preserved walls and towers
- Wander through the fortress’s narrow streets and take in the history
Evening
- Return to Ashgabat and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant
- Take a stroll along the city’s boulevards, lined with monuments and fountains
Things to Know
- Both Nisa and Anau Fortresses are rich in history and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape
- Be respectful of the ancient sites and avoid touching or climbing on the ruins
Day 4: Ashgabat & Departure
Morning
- Spend the morning shopping for souvenirs or exploring a local market (e.g. Tolkuchka Bazaar)
- Visit the Ertugrul Gazi Mosque, one of the city’s most beautiful mosques
Afternoon
- Depart for the airport and fly back home
Visa Requirements
- Citizens of most countries require a visa to enter Turkmenistan
- Visas can be obtained through the Turkmenistan Embassy or Consulate in your home country, or through a licensed travel agency
Transportation
- Domestic flights are available between Ashgabat and other major cities
- Private car and driver can be hired for day trips or longer excursions
- Taxi services are also available in Ashgabat
Other Things to Know
- Turkmenistan is a relatively closed country, so internet access may be limited
- The local currency is the Turkmenistan manat (TMT), but US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted
- Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting mosques or ancient sites
