Turkmenistan 6-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Ashgabat
- Arrive at Ashgabat International Airport
- Meet your guide and transfer to hotel for check-in
- Visit the Neutrality Arch, a 95-meter-tall monument dedicated to Turkmenistan’s neutrality
- Explore the surrounding park, which offers stunning views of the city
Things to Know:
- Visa requirements: Citizens of most countries require a visa to enter Turkmenistan. You can obtain an e-visa online or through a travel agency.
- Currency: The Turkmenistan manat (TMT) is the local currency. You can exchange currency at banks or hotels.
Day 2: Ashgabat
- Visit the Darvaza Gas Crater, a natural gas field that has been burning continuously since 1971
- Explore the State Museum of Turkmenistan, which showcases the country’s history and culture
- Wander through the Tolkuchka Bazaar, a bustling marketplace selling traditional clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs

- Take a stroll along the Ashgabat Boulevard, a pedestrian walkway lined with monuments, fountains, and cafes
Day 3: Nisa Fortress & Anau
- Drive to the ancient fortress of Nisa ( approx. 1-hour journey)
- Explore the ruins of the Parthian Empire’s capital city
- Continue to Anau, a small town known for its ancient fortifications and scenic countryside views
Things to Know:
- Transportation: Turkmenistan has limited public transportation. Private car rentals or guided tours are recommended.
- Language: Turkmen is the official language, but many people speak Russian as a second language.
Day 4: Merv
- Drive to Merv (approx. 2-hour journey), one of the oldest and most historic cities in Central Asia
- Explore the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum, the oldest and largest mausoleum in Merv
- Visit the Kyz Kala Fortress, a well-preserved ancient fortification
Activity:
- Take a camel ride through the scenic countryside surrounding Merv
Day 5: Mary Province
- Drive to the Mary Province (approx. 4-hour journey), known for its stunning natural landscapes and ancient archaeological sites
- Visit the Gonur Depe archaeological site, featuring ancient ruins and artifacts
- Explore the scenic Karakum Desert landscape
Things to Know:
- Accommodation: Luxury hotels are scarce in Turkmenistan. Be prepared for basic accommodations outside of Ashgabat.
- Culture: Turkmenistan is a conservative country. Dress modestly and respect local customs.
Day 6: Departure from Ashgabat
- Return to Ashgabat (approx. 4-hour journey)
- Spend the morning shopping for souvenirs or exploring a local market
- Depart from Ashgabat International Airport

- The Akhal-Teke Horse Farm, where you can see the famous Turkmen horses
