5 Days in Venice: The First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1: St Mark’s Square and the Grand Canal

  • Morning: St Mark’s Basilica on your timed slot, 8,500 square metres of gold mosaic behind bronze horses looted from Constantinople in 1204.
  • Late morning: The Doge’s Palace, Tintoretto’s Paradise, and a thousand years of Venetian government. The combined ticket runs about EUR30-35.
  • Lunch: Cicchetti and an ombra standing at a bacaro.
  • Afternoon: The Campanile di San Marco, then vaporetto Line 1 down the full Grand Canal, about 40 minutes past four bridges and centuries of palazzi.
  • Evening: Dinner away from San Marco, then the Riva degli Schiavoni after dark.

Day 2: Rialto, San Polo, and the gondola question

  • Morning: The Rialto Pescheria and Erberia markets before 9am, then the Rialto Bridge for the classic view.
  • Midday: San Polo’s back streets, including Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari for Titian’s Assumption.
  • Afternoon: The gondola-versus-traghetto comparison, EUR90 for 30 minutes fixed daytime rate against a EUR2 traghetto crossing on the same kind of boat.
  • Evening: Dinner in San Polo or Santa Croce.

Day 3: Murano, Burano, and Torcello

  • Morning: Vaporetto from Fondamente Nove to Murano for glassblowing dating to the 13th century.
  • Midday: Burano for the dyed-candy houses and lunch on lagoon seafood.
  • Afternoon: Torcello for the oldest Byzantine cathedral in the lagoon and near-total quiet.
  • Evening: Dinner back in Cannaregio.

Day 4: Cannaregio, the Ghetto, and Dorsoduro

  • Morning: The Jewish Ghetto in Cannaregio, established 1516, plus the Strada Nova for local shopping.
  • Midday: Cross to Dorsoduro over the Accademia Bridge, lunch near Campo Santa Margherita.
  • Afternoon: The Gallerie dell’Accademia or the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, whichever era of art you care about more.
  • Evening: Sunset on the Zattere promenade, then dinner in Dorsoduro.

Day 5: Castello and the Doge’s Palace Secret Itineraries

  • Morning: Castello, the largest sestiere and the least touristed, home to the Arsenale, the historic shipyard, and the Biennale gardens when the exhibition is running. Local dining here is better value than anywhere near San Marco.
  • Midday: Return to the Doge’s Palace for the Secret Itineraries tour, a separate booking that walks the administrative rooms, the torture chambers, and the Bridge of Sighs’s prison cells, ending at Casanova’s escape route. It runs around EUR40 and books out days ahead in peak season.
  • Afternoon: A short boat ride to San Giorgio Maggiore for Palladio’s church and a campanile view back across St Mark’s basin, quieter than the equivalent view from the San Marco side.
  • Evening: A slow farewell dinner, ideally somewhere you have not already eaten this trip.

Where to stay for five days

Dorsoduro or Castello both work well over five days: Dorsoduro for proximity to the Accademia and Guggenheim, Castello for a genuinely local pace once you are past the San Marco end of it.

Things to know before you land

Venice’s historic center has no roads and no cars, only foot traffic and boats, aside from the Lido. A single vaporetto ticket runs EUR9.50 for 75 minutes one direction; over five days, a 72-hour or 7-day pass through veneziaunica.it , about EUR45 or EUR65, is the better math.
