Day 1: Settle Into Vienna
Morning
Land, check into a hotel near Wien Hauptbahnhof or Wien Westbahnhof so tomorrow’s departure is simple, and buy a 24-hour or 7-day Wiener Linien transit ticket (standalone 48h/72h tickets were discontinued Jan 1, 2026, so don’t look for one). The airport S7 Schnellbahn covers VIE to Wien Mitte in about 25 minutes for a fraction of the CAT train’s fare, which only saves about 9 minutes.
Afternoon
Walk the 1st district loosely: Stephansplatz, the Graben, and a coffeehouse stop for a Melange, which arrives automatically with a glass of water. This is orientation, not sightseeing; the Vienna guide has the full palace-and-museum rundown for a return trip.
Evening
Eat near your hotel and get an early night. Tomorrow’s Bratislava trains run every 30-60 minutes starting early, and there’s no reservation to make, just a platform to find at Wien Hauptbahnhof.
Day 2: Bratislava, Slovakia
Morning
Catch the REX regional express to Bratislava Hlavna Stanica, as fast as 56 minutes since 2025 electrification work cut the old 1h06 schedule down. No seat reservation exists or is needed; buy a ticket and board. Head straight for the Old Town: the Main Square, St. Martin’s Cathedral, and the compact, walkable historic core. Afternoon
Bratislava Castle overlooks the Danube a short walk from the Old Town, worth the climb for the river view alone. Lunch runs noticeably cheaper than Vienna for a similar plate, still in euros, still Schengen, no border stop.
Evening
Take the REX back to Wien Hauptbahnhof (trains run through the evening) and have a final Vienna dinner before your onward trip.
Should You Do Bratislava or Stay in Vienna on Day 2?
Do Bratislava. Two days in Vienna alone barely scratches the surface, but a 56-minute train ride to an entirely different country and capital, for the price of a nice dinner, is the kind of thing a longer Vienna trip can’t easily replicate. Save deeper Vienna sightseeing for a return visit or the 3-day version of this plan.
Do You Need to Book the Bratislava Train Ahead?
No. REX trains have no reservation system at all, they simply can’t sell out, and 19 departures run daily roughly every half hour to hour. Buy a single ticket or the bundled Bratislava-Ticket at the station or online the same morning; there’s no advantage to booking days ahead.
Keep a printed or downloaded copy of your train times before you leave Vienna. Cell signal is fine on this route, but a dead phone at Bratislava Hlavna Stanica with no idea when the next train back leaves is an avoidable headache.
