Chobe National Park Botswana
Chobe National Park, Botswana
Chobe has the highest concentration of African elephants on earth. Current estimates put the Chobe elephant population at over 120,000 – a number that has created its own conservation debate, since the elephants strip the riverfront woodland and reshape the landscape faster than it can recover. Watching 200 elephants move through the afternoon light to drink at the Chobe River is genuinely one of the great wildlife spectacles available anywhere.
The park covers 11,700 square kilometres in northern Botswana. The Chobe Riverfront, the most visited section, sits along the river forming Botswana’s border with Namibia. The town of Kasane is the practical base, at the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers.
The Chobe Riverfront
The riverfront is most productive in the dry season (June through October) when animals concentrate near the water. Boat safaris on the Chobe River give close-range elephant access that is unavailable on land – herds swim across, mothers lift calves through the shallows, bulls stand in water to their bellies. Boat safaris typically run 2-3 hours in the morning or late afternoon; afternoon light is better for photography. Most lodges in Kasane include river safaris as part of their packages.
The game drive section along the riverfront road offers similar sightings by land: elephants, buffalo, lion and leopard in the riverine woodland, and exceptional birdwatching. Chobe has over 450 bird species and the riverine habitat concentrates them year-round.
Savuti
About 250km south of Kasane, Savuti is a remote section of the park known for predator concentrations – lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas. The Savuti marsh attracts large herds in the wet season. Access requires a 4WD and several hours of driving; most visitors come by charter flight. This is specialist territory for people who have already done the riverfront and want more demanding conditions.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Kasane ranges from budget guesthouses to mid-range lodges. Chobe Safari Lodge on the riverfront has the best immediate access to the river and combines boat and game drive safaris. Chobe Game Lodge is the most established luxury option, with boat cruises and the usual big-cat-seeking drives.
For Savuti, small fly-in camps (Savuti Camp, Linyanti Explorations) are the appropriate accommodation – expensive, excellent, remote.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is 60km east of Kasane, straddling the Zimbabwe-Zambia border. A day trip from Chobe is very practical. The falls are most dramatic between February and June when the Zambezi is high; between August and October visibility through the spray improves. The Zimbabwean side gives the broader view; the Zambian side allows walking above the falls.
Practical Notes
The dry season (June-October) is peak safari time and peak prices. The green season (November-May) has fewer visitors, lower rates, and newborn animals – but also heat and rain that can make roads difficult and reduce visibility. Malaria prophylaxis is standard for northern Botswana. Book accommodation and activities at least 3-4 months ahead for dry season.
