Los Angeles
Los Angeles is entering one of the most significant years for its cultural infrastructure in a generation. The David Geffen Galleries at LACMA, designed by Peter Zumthor in a vast curving concrete form, opened in April 2026 with 300-seat theatre and significantly expanded gallery space. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s $1 billion project in Exposition Park, opens in September 2026. The Getty Villa, which closed for restoration after January 2025’s wildfires disrupted service to the Pacific Palisades area, reopened in June 2025. If you’re planning a visit in 2026, the museum calendar alone is worth building your itinerary around.
What the January 2025 Fires Changed
The Palisades and Eaton fires of January 2025 caused severe damage to residential neighborhoods and disrupted tourism for months. Most of the city’s main visitor destinations were unaffected, though the fires fundamentally changed how Angelenos talk about the city. Parts of Pacific Palisades remain in recovery. The Getty Villa survived and has reopened fully. The broader city is functioning normally, and the tourism industry, which supports over 540,000 jobs, has actively encouraged visitors to return. The FIFA World Cup 2026 matches at SoFi Stadium (June through July) and the Lucas Museum opening in September make 2026 a particularly dense year for large events.
Neighbourhoods Worth Your Time
Hollywood Boulevard itself is overrated as a place to spend time. The walk of fame is there, the crowds are there, and the experience is largely a series of costume characters asking for tips. The better version of LA is found in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Silver Lake and Los Feliz, northeast of Hollywood, have the city’s best concentration of independent restaurants, bookshops, and coffee places within walking distance of each other. The Griffith Observatory sits above both, and the hike up through Griffith Park from the Los Feliz entry is manageable for most fitness levels, with views that justify the climb. The park itself, at over 4,200 acres, is larger than the island of Manhattan.
The Arts District in Downtown LA has transitioned from warehouse space to a legitimate food and gallery district over the past decade. Smorgasburg LA runs on Sundays at Alameda Produce Market and draws around 60 vendors. Grand Central Market on South Broadway has operated since 1917 and remains the most useful single building in downtown for eating across a range of budgets and cuisines.
Key Museums in 2026
LACMA is now the largest art museum in the western United States by footprint. The Zumthor building on Wilshire adds significantly to its display capacity. Take the D Line Metro directly to the Wilshire/Fairfax station; the museum entrance is a short walk. Adult general admission is around $25.
The Getty Center in Brentwood remains free to enter (parking costs $25, and fills up on weekends). The collection is strongest in European paintings and decorative arts. The building and gardens by Richard Meier are genuinely spectacular on a clear day, and the views across the city from the garden terrace are among the best free views in Los Angeles. Take the free shuttle tram from the car park or walk up from the street-level station if you arrive by Metro bus.
The Lucas Museum in Exposition Park will hold the world’s largest collection of original Star Wars art and props alongside broader narrative art spanning illustration, cinema, and digital media. It sits adjacent to the Natural History Museum and the California Science Center, making Exposition Park one of the densest museum zones in any American city. The USC campus is also walkable from here.
Eating
The taco trucks and stands of East LA, particularly along Cesar Chavez Avenue, serve better food than most of what tourists default to on the Westside. Mariscos trucks specialising in seafood tacos and aguachile are particularly strong and cost a fraction of restaurant equivalents. Grand Central Market has Eggslut, Wexler’s Deli, and DTLA Cheese among others, and the building’s age and layout mean most stalls are cooking in front of you.
For a sit-down meal with some seriousness, the Santa Monica Farmers Market on Wednesday mornings (Arizona Avenue, open from 08:30) supplies most of the city’s best chefs and is worth attending even if you’re not cooking. The market has been running since 1981.
In-N-Out is not overrated. The animal style burger and animal style fries are the correct order. Go to a location slightly away from tourist areas to avoid long queues; the one on Sepulveda near LAX is a reasonable choice if you’re passing through.
Getting Around
Los Angeles has a functioning Metro system that most visitors ignore in favour of taxis or rideshares. The D Line (Purple Line) runs from Wilshire/Western to the Westside and now reaches Beverly Hills. The A Line connects downtown to Long Beach. The B Line connects downtown to North Hollywood via Hollywood/Highland station. A day pass costs around $7, which is less than one rideshare fare across town at peak hours.
Renting a car gives you more flexibility but also means navigating parking costs of $20 to $40 per location in central areas. Traffic during weekday rush hours (07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 19:30) is genuinely severe; factor this into any plan that involves driving between neighbourhoods during those windows.
Where to Stay
The Hollywood Roosevelt on Hollywood Boulevard has operated since 1927 and hosted the first Academy Awards ceremony. It has been through several renovation cycles and the current version is a solid upper-mid option with genuine history attached, and better-placed than most Westside hotels for reaching the Griffith Observatory and the Metro network. Rates in shoulder season start around $250.
For beach proximity, Santa Monica and Venice have a good spread of hotels and vacation rentals within walking distance of the water. The Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica is the landmark property, occupying a bluff above the beach with rates that reflect the position. Budget travellers do better in Silver Lake or Los Feliz, where Airbnb options in apartment buildings and houses give you a neighbourhood base rather than a tourist corridor.
Practical Notes
The weather in the morning near the coast (Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu) is often overcast from May through July, a pattern locals call “June Gloom.” It typically burns off by noon. Pack a layer regardless of the season, particularly if you’re planning an evening at an outdoor venue.
Street parking in most commercial neighbourhoods is metered and runs until 20:00 or 22:00 depending on the area. Download the LA Express Park app if you are renting a car; it shows real-time meter availability in downtown and other heavily monitored zones. The city has aggressive parking enforcement and tow trucks operate on the main commercial streets; check signs carefully before leaving a car.
The Metro’s TAP card is the fastest way to pay for public transit. Cards can be loaded at any Metro station vending machine and used on bus and rail. If you are attending a World Cup match at SoFi Stadium, the C Line (Green Line) connects to Inglewood, though the stadium also has a dedicated rideshare drop-off zone that is well-managed for large events.
