Before you go: the safety reality. Johannesburg has real violent-crime risk, armed robbery, carjacking, and smash-and-grab theft at traffic lights are genuine concerns, not brochure caution. That said, millions of visitors pass through every year without incident by following a few rules: Uber or Bolt instead of walking, the Gautrain for the OR Tambo-Sandton-Pretoria run, locked car doors and alertness at intersections, nothing valuable on display, and Soweto plus the inner city on a guided tour only.</description>
