The House of the Black Heads is a 1999 reconstruction, not a 700-year-old original, and that single fact reframes how to look at most of Old Town. Built in 1334 for the brotherhood of unmarried German merchants, destroyed by German bombs in 1941 and leveled outright by the Soviets afterward, the building standing on Rātslaukums today was rebuilt with real historical fidelity for Riga’s 800th anniversary. The Dutch Renaissance facade, the ornate ballroom, and the surviving 14th-century vaulted cellars are worth the ticket (adults €10, students and seniors €6, family tickets from €18, under 7 free), and it’s open all seven days, 10:00 to 17:00, unlike most of the city’s museums.

The romantic case for Riga is not the Freedom Monument at sunset. It’s what happens after dark: a medieval cellar lit entirely by candles, a bar 26 floors up with a glass elevator, and a spa half an hour down the coast. Start with where to stay.
