Milan’s best romantic evening is a thermal spa built inside a 16th-century city wall, and its best hour is a walkway 40 m above the Galleria’s shopping floor at the end of the day. Both opened or reopened in their current form recently, both are bookable, and neither is on the standard list of things couples are told to do here. Start with those two and the rest of the evening arranges itself.

Milan is a two to three day city and an excellent base for a fortnight. That is not a contradiction, it is the plan. Once the Duomo, the Last Supper, the Castello and a Navigli evening are done, the best thing you can do with a fourth night is put it on a train. Verona is 1h15 east, Turin is under an hour west, and the Bernina line climbs into Switzerland from a station 2.

Milan has one genuinely world-class museum for children and it is not the one on most lists. The Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci at Via San Vittore 21 is Italy’s largest science and technology museum, and it holds real submarines, trains, aircraft and ships alongside working models built from Leonardo’s codices. Adults pay €10 and anyone aged 3 to 26 pays €7.50. Start here, and book the submarine separately.

Milan is the most walkable of Italy’s big cities and almost nobody says so. The Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala, the Museo del Novecento, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Castello Sforzesco sit inside roughly 1.5 km of flat, straight streets, and Santa Maria delle Grazie is a fifteen-minute walk from the cathedral. No hills, no bridges, no stairs between sights. Here are four routes that use that. For a guided version of any of them, compare Milan walking tours .

Turin is 47 minutes from Milan on the fast train. Verona is about an hour and ten. Those two numbers change what a day trip from Milan means, because both are full cities with world-class museums rather than an afternoon in a village, and both are routinely written up as two-hour-plus journeys that talk people out of going. Milano Centrale runs high-speed services on both routes at least twice an hour.

Book the San Siro tour first. It is the one guided product in Milan with a hard external constraint on it, because the stadium closes or shortens the route on match and event days, and both AC Milan and Inter play there. Everything else on this page can be arranged with a day or two of notice. Here are the guided experiences that are genuinely worth the ticket, and what each one actually puts you inside.

Milan’s headline sights sit inside about 1.5 km of flat, straight streets, which is the real reason this city works on foot in a way Rome and Naples do not. The Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala, the Museo del Novecento, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Castello Sforzesco are all within that box, and Santa Maria delle Grazie is a fifteen-minute walk from the cathedral. The hours are the hard part, not the distances.

Milan is at its best when you stop queueing for monuments and start doing things in it. The single strongest new option is the Highline Galleria, a 250 m walkway across the roof of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II at about 40 m up, reopened on 6 February 2026 and priced at €12 general, €10 reduced. Nearly every visitor walks through the Galleria. Almost nobody knows you can now walk on top of it.

Two days, two of the six real day trips from Milan, no overnight bag required. Day one is Lake Como, the marquee trip: a train to Varenna, then a short ferry to Bellagio. Day two is Bergamo’s walled Città Alta, the easiest half day on this list. Need more range? The 3 day , 4 day , 5 day and 6 day versions extend this same spine with Verona, Turin, Lake Maggiore and Franciacorta.

Two days in Milan means the Duomo and the Last Supper, full stop, with Navigli’s aperitivo hour as the payoff at the end of day 2. This is the same core spine we extend in the 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , and 7 day versions, so it works as a standalone weekend or as the foundation for a longer trip. Book these before you go: The Last Supper skip-line ticket : the hardest booking in Milan, a timed 15-minute slot that sells out weeks ahead Duomo rooftop ticket : timed entry, dress code applies, EUR 16 to EUR 26 depending on tier Check rates on Booking.

Three days nests in a third real day trip beyond Lake Como and Bergamo: Verona, a genuine high speed hop under 90 minutes each way. Day one is Lake Como’s train and ferry combination, day two is Bergamo’s walled Città Alta, and day three is Verona’s Roman Arena and historic core. Need a shorter or longer plan? The 2 day covers just the first two, while the 4 day , 5 day and 6 day versions keep extending this spine with Turin, Lake Maggiore and Franciacorta.

Three days in Milan takes the 2-day core , the Duomo and the Last Supper, and adds La Scala and Brera’s art scene as a full third day. It is the same spine the 4 , 5 , 6 , and 7 day versions build on, so nothing here gets undone later, only extended.

Four days adds Turin to the spine, the day trip most first timers skip and most regret skipping. Day one is Lake Como, day two Bergamo’s Città Alta, day three Verona’s Roman Arena, and day four is Turin’s Egyptian Museum and arcaded center, about an hour away by high speed train. Need a different length? The 2 day and 3 day versions cover just the first steps, while the 5 day and 6 day plans keep going with Lake Maggiore and Franciacorta.

Four days in Milan takes the 3-day plan , the Duomo, the Last Supper, La Scala and Brera, and adds a full fourth day for the Quadrilatero della Moda and the modern Porta Nuova skyline. The 5 , 6 , and 7 day versions build further from here with day trips.

Five days adds a second lake to the spine: Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands, after Como, Bergamo, Verona and Turin. Day one is Lake Como, day two Bergamo, day three Verona, day four Turin, and day five is Stresa’s boat hopping day among the islands. Need a different length? The 2 day , 3 day and 4 day versions cover fewer of these, while the 6 day plan closes with Franciacorta.

Five days in Milan takes the 4-day core , the Duomo, the Last Supper, La Scala, Brera and the Quadrilatero, and hands the fifth day to San Siro and a second, daylight look at the Navigli. The 6 and 7 day versions add the Cimitero Monumentale, Fondazione Prada and Sant’Ambrogio on top of this same base. If Lake Como, Bergamo or Verona sound better than a fifth city day, see our Milan, Italy guide for the day-trip version of this same plan.

Six days completes the full spine with Franciacorta, the one day trip on this list that needs a booked tour instead of a train ticket. Day one is Lake Como, day two Bergamo, day three Verona, day four Turin, day five Lake Maggiore, and day six is a wine region with no direct rail line in. Need fewer days? The 2 day , 3 day , 4 day and 5 day versions cover fewer of these trips.

Six days in Milan takes the 5-day core , the Duomo, the Last Supper, La Scala, Brera, the Quadrilatero and San Siro, and adds the Cimitero Monumentale and Fondazione Prada as a sixth city day. The 7 day version adds Sant’Ambrogio on top of this same base; see our Milan, Italy guide if Lake Como, Bergamo or Verona interest you more than a sixth day in the city. Book these before you go:

Seven days in Milan takes the 6-day plan , the Duomo, the Last Supper, La Scala, Brera, the Quadrilatero, San Siro and Fondazione Prada, and closes with a slow flex day built around the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio. It is the longest version of this nested itinerary that never leaves the city; see our Milan, Italy guide if Lake Como, Bergamo or Verona interest you more than a seventh day in Milan itself.

The Duomo rooftop is the single best-value ticket in Milan: EUR 16 to walk up 251 stairs, EUR 18 to ride the lift, and either way you end up standing among the spires with the Madonnina overhead and, on a clear day, the Alps on the horizon. This page covers the rooftop tiers and the logistics of getting up there; for the cathedral’s Gothic history and interior, see our Milan Cathedral guide .

Milan Cathedral, the Duomo di Milano, took nearly 600 years to finish: construction started in 1386 and the last bronze doors were not installed until 1965. That timeline explains the building itself, Gothic spires and flying buttresses standing alongside Renaissance and Baroque additions layered in over centuries. This page covers the cathedral as a building, its history, interior, and museum. For the rooftop terraces and ticket tiers, see our Duomo rooftop guide .

Milan sits closer to more genuinely different day trips than almost any base in northern Italy, and most first timers use none of them. Lake Como is 65 minutes away by train. Bergamo’s walled old town is about 50. Verona’s Roman arena is roughly 75. Turin, Piedmont’s underrated capital, is about an hour. Add Lake Maggiore’s Borromean Islands and the Franciacorta wine region, and you have six real day trips inside a two hour radius, plus the Bernina Express into Switzerland for anyone with a full extra day to spend.

Milan rewards a fast start and punishes a slow one. Three to four days gets you the Duomo rooftop, a genuine shot at Leonardo’s Last Supper, and an evening or two in Navigli or Brera without sprinting. The single thing that can wreck a Milan trip is booking the Last Supper too late: it is a timed, small-group, 15-minute entry released on a rolling schedule months out, and it sells out.

Milan packs six genuinely separate paid or timed experiences into one walkable center: the Duomo cathedral, the Duomo rooftop, the Last Supper, Castello Sforzesco’s museums, San Siro, and La Scala. None of them are included with each other, and one of them, the Last Supper, has to be booked months out. Here is what each actually costs, how long to allow, and where the booking traps are. Milan’s Key Sights at a Glance Sight Price Time needed Booking lead Duomo cathedral EUR 10 with treasury 45 to 60 min Walk-up usually fine Duomo rooftop EUR 16 stairs, EUR 18 lift 60 to 90 min Book ahead for weekends The Last Supper EUR 15 15 min timed slot Months ahead, mandatory Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Free 20 to 30 min None Castello Sforzesco museums EUR 5 60 to 90 min None San Siro Museum & Tour From EUR 39 60 to 90 min Check match-day closures For the two Duomo tickets specifically, we split the coverage in two: the Duomo rooftop guide covers the terrace tiers, lift versus stairs, and queue timing, while the Milan Cathedral guide covers the interior, the stained glass, and the building’s 600-year construction history.
