The four main day excursions from Paramaribo differ a lot in effort. One is a relaxed boat day, two are moderate, and one needs a rough mountain track. This page ranks them from easiest to hardest, with typical per-person prices. Operators usually quote in euros or US dollars, and the price normally covers transport and a guide. Easiest: the Commewijne River by boat Departing from the Leonsberg jetty, a covered wooden boat spends six to eight hours on the water.

UNESCO inscribed Paramaribo’s Historic Inner City in 2002 for its mix of Dutch colonial design with local materials and African spatial traditions. The old town sits on the west bank of the Suriname River, around 15 to 20 km from the Atlantic. This page sorts its sights by theme rather than by street. Quick facts Setting: a flat grid of painted timber buildings on red brick footings Most sights are free to see from outside Best hours: before 10:30 and after 15:30 Dress modestly in places of worship Taxis are unmetered, so fix the fare first Places of worship Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral.

Paramaribo’s old town is flat and small enough to walk, and two routes work well depending on the time of day. The morning loop of about 3.5 km runs for roughly 2.5 hours and includes the fort, which closes early in the afternoon. The afternoon walk is shorter and finishes at the river as the food stalls open. Guided versions are sold by local agencies for about EUR 20 to 25 per person.

Couples in Paramaribo get the most from slow evenings by the river rather than from sightseeing marathons. There are no resort beaches, since the coast is mud and mangrove, and the Suriname River is far too strong for swimming. So plans here revolve around the water, the food and the wooden old town. The options below run from cheap and simple to a special occasion. Simple and low cost Waterkant at dusk.

Three multi day journeys leave from Paramaribo, and each suits a different traveller. A river lodge stay is the gentlest, the nature reserve expedition is the most physical, and the Galibi trip is tied to a season. All are sold as inclusive packages, usually in euros per person, and all are better booked through an established operator. Which journey suits you Culture and river time: Upper Suriname River lodges, 3 or 4 days, about EUR 280 to 420 Hiking and birds: Central Suriname Nature Reserve and the Voltzberg, 4 days, about EUR 320 to 480 Wildlife at night: Galibi turtle trip, 3 days, about EUR 220 to 320 Upper Suriname River lodges Buses and vehicles take about three hours from the capital to Atjoni on the Afobakaweg, where tarmac gives way to water.
