Done at an unhurried pace with stops inside each monument, it takes 3 to 4 hours and needs nothing more than comfortable shoes and an early start. Those three headline monuments deserve the time they get, with triumphal arches, fluted turquoise domes, stalactite muqarnas niches, and carved Kufic calligraphy all worth slowing down for. But two lesser-visited stops round out the picture, and one hilltop mosque gives you the best single view in the city.

The three madrasahs of Registan Square do double duty after dark: warm floodlights wash the tilework every evening until 23:00, free to view from the public platform, no ticket required. That alone is worth a second visit to the square once the day-trip crowds have gone. But on scheduled evenings in spring and autumn, the same facades become a screen for something bigger. Walk toward Registan Square on any given morning and you will likely see a handler offering photos with a chained golden eagle, sometimes a monkey on a leash beside it. Skip it. These birds are taken from the wild and kept tethered for tourist photo-ops, and paying for the picture funds exactly that practice. This is the single most important thing to know about animals in Samarkand, and it comes before anything else in this category.

If you came to Samarkand chasing canyon treks, rapids, or a zipline over a gorge, stop searching the old town for it. There is no adventure sports scene inside the city limits, and no honest guide should pretend otherwise.
