Three plans follow, for 3, 4 and 5 days. Each one assumes you travel in the calm-sea months, about May to September, when boats run and Pigeon Island is open. In the north-east monsoon, roughly October or November to February or March, the sea is rough and Pigeon Island is closed, so a trip then should lean on temples, the fort and Kanniya Hot Springs. Getting to Trincomalee The road from Colombo runs roughly 260 km.

These walks are ordered by the time of day they suit best, because heat decides how pleasant Trincomalee is on foot. The first is a dawn walk by the water, the second a late afternoon climb, and the third a short stop in town. A separate note covers the war cemetery, which lies too far out to walk. Dawn: the fish landing on Dutch Bay When: 06:00 to 08:30. Distance: short and flat.

Trincomalee is a place for couples who would rather watch the light change than fill a schedule. Three loose plans follow, built from views, beaches and boat time. Choose the calm months, about May to September. The north-east monsoon, from roughly October or November to February or March, brings rough water. A slow weekend Friday evening. Arrive and settle in at Nilaveli, about 14 km north of town, where the beach is wide and quiet and resorts line the sand.

This page lists Trincomalee’s main sights in one place, with what each costs, how to dress and what to know before you go. Most of them cluster on the peninsula, so a half day on foot or by tuk-tuk can cover the first three. Most guided outings around Trincomalee are arranged person to person: a boat captain on Nilaveli beach, a jeep driver heading for the elephant reservoirs, a tuk-tuk driver who knows the old town. That makes a handful of good questions more useful than a brochure. Below, each outing comes with what it involves and what to ask before you pay. Pigeon Island snorkelling trip What it is. A short boat ride from Nilaveli beach to a marine national park run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

Parents planning Trincomalee usually want to know three things: which outings are easy, which need stamina, and when the sea is safe. This page sorts the options that way. Check the sea before anything else The east coast has its rough season when many beaches elsewhere in Sri Lanka are calm. Between roughly October or November and February or March the north-east monsoon churns the sea, and Pigeon Island is closed to visitors.

The useful question for a Trincomalee day trip is how long you will spend in the vehicle. Here is each option with its travel time first, then what you get for it. Distances and timing Destination Road time one way Best for Season Kanniya Hot Springs Short, about 8 km A quick soak Daytime, any month Marble Beach Roughly 10 to 16 km A calm swim Check the sea first Nilaveli and Pigeon Island About 14 km to the beach, then a boat Snorkelling About May to September Kaudulla About 2 hours, around 75 km Elephants About September or October to December Minneriya About 2 hours Elephants August to September Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa About 2.

Trincomalee’s calendar is set by the north-east monsoon, so what you can do depends on the month. This guide works through the year and then lists the activities that run in each window. The year in four windows Window Sea and weather What works About November to February North-east monsoon, rough sea, rain Temples, Fort Frederick, Kanniya Hot Springs, Kaudulla elephants from about November to December About March to April Seas settling, season starting Whale watching begins, sights on land About May to September Calm sea Pigeon Island, diving, whale watching, Minneriya elephants in August and September About October Transition month, rough sea possible Kaudulla elephants from about September or October, sea can turn rough Dates shift from year to year, and the sea decides, not the calendar.
