Urgench’s boulevards run wide and straight, laid out under Soviet planning rather than grown organically over centuries, and that grid makes a 4 km, 2.5 to 3 hour self-guided walk far easier to follow than it sounds on paper. Leg 1: railway station to Manguberdi plaza Start at Urgench Railway Station or the Hamkor Bank plaza on Al-Khwarizmi Street and walk north into the Jalal al-Din Mangburni Memorial Complex, an 8-hectare pedestrian-only square built in 2022.

Most visitors give Urgench zero hours of their own and rush straight to Khiva; that skips a genuinely different half-day of Soviet-era monuments and Zoroastrian history that Khiva simply does not have. Start at the 25-meter bronze rider The Jalal al-Din Mangburni Memorial Complex opened in August 2022 across an 8-hectare pedestrianized plaza, its centerpiece a 25-meter bronze equestrian statue of the last Khwarazmshah ruler holding his sword aloft. An underground road tunnel routes traffic beneath the square, so the plaza itself stays quiet, with musical fountains and bronze relief panels depicting the ruler’s battles against the Mongols.

A kid who has just sat through a UNESCO madrasa lecture in Khiva does not want another monument; a pedal boat and a Ferris wheel back in Urgench fix that fast. Youth Lake covers most of a family afternoon by itself Urgench Youth Lake (Yoshlar Ko’li) is a 15-hectare lakeside park built for exactly this: pedal-boat rentals on the water, a Ferris wheel, a small carousel, lakeside cafés for ice cream breaks, and miniature scale models of Uzbekistan’s landmarks, including a scaled-down Registan, small enough that kids recognize the real one later in the trip.

Ask a shopkeeper on Al-Khwarizmi Street where to rent a sandboard for the Kyzylkum dunes and you will get a polite, confused stare, because that shop does not exist anywhere in Urgench. The honest inventory is close to zero Urgench and the surrounding Khorezm oasis have no commercial adventure sports infrastructure at all: no rock-climbing crags or climbing gyms, no via ferrata, no whitewater rafting, no paragliding launches, no skydiving operators, no downhill mountain biking trails, and no sandboard rental shops.
