Sorting Cologne’s activities by what they cost keeps a first day from sliding past a museum ticket and two Kölsch without you noticing. Here’s the same short list, split by price tier instead of by category.

The Hohenzollernbrücke pedestrian bridge, covered in engraved love locks, costs nothing and gives a straight view down the Rhine toward the cathedral. The Altstadt around Alter Markt and Fischmarkt is free to wander, as is the Rheinboulevard in Deutz, best in the hour before sunset for the classic shot of the Dom across the water. Flora Botanical Garden is free daily from 08:00 to dusk, and Melaten Cemetery offers a quiet, no-cost walk among 19th-century monuments.

A KVB single fare is €3.50, a 24-hour ticket €8.40. Climbing the cathedral’s south tower (533 steps, no lift) is €8 regular or €4 reduced, and the Treasury is the same €8 / €4. Book a skip-the-line tower and treasury ticket rather than queueing at Roncalliplatz in summer. Seasonally, from mid-March to early November, the Kölner Seilbahn cable car crosses the Rhine for €5.50 one way; check the current season dates on koelner-seilbahn.de before planning around it. A Kölsch at a traditional Brauhaus runs €2.20 to €3.00, and a Halve Hahn snack is €6 to €8.50.

This tier is where the cathedral’s sightseeing fee sits: since 1 July 2026, entry outside worship hours is €12 regular, €6 reduced, with the full exemption list (services, private prayer, under-14s, severely disabled visitors plus a companion) on koelner-dom.de . A combined tower-and-treasury ticket costs €12 / €6 rather than buying each separately. Museum Ludwig is €19.80 adult, €13.50 reduced, free under 18, and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum runs €8 to €13 depending on the current exhibition. A 1-hour Rhine panorama cruise from Frankenwerft typically costs €15 to €18.
Above €30
Claudius Therme, the outdoor thermal pool in Deutz with a Dom-skyline view, ranges from €19.50 for a weekday two-hour visit to €39.50 for a full weekend day, plus €8 for the sauna area. If you’re combining several regional day trips into the same stay, a Deutschland-Ticket at €63 a month covers the trains for all of them.
Practical tips
Buy the cathedral sightseeing ticket online before a summer weekend to skip the line at Roncalliplatz, and keep the tower-and-treasury combo in mind rather than paying for both separately at €8 apiece.
