Potsdam Bus Tours: What You Actually Get
Three different operators run something called a Potsdam bus tour, and only one of them puts the guide in an 18th-century Prussian costume. Worth knowing before you book, since they’re not interchangeable.
City Sightseeing “Best of Potsdam”
The standard option is an open-top red double-decker on a fixed 16-stop loop, departing every 30 minutes from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and covering Sanssouci Palace, the Orangery, the New Palace, Cecilienhof and the Neuer Garten, the Dutch Quarter, and Glienicke Bridge, with multilingual audio commentary through headphones at every seat. It’s the right pick if you want one ticket, one loop, and the freedom to hop off at whichever stop actually interests you and catch a later bus onward. Book the hop-on hop-off ticket rather than buying at the curb, since same-day prices at the stop can run higher than booking ahead.
“Alter Fritz” costumed tour
A smaller, more theatrical option runs costumed guides dressed as Frederick the Great and the “Soldier King” Frederick William I, narrating anecdotes from the two reigns as the bus moves through the city rather than reading a standard script. It’s a better fit if you already know the basic palace layout and want the personalities behind it, not a first-timer’s orientation loop.
Kombirundfahrt: bus plus boat
Potsdam also sells a bundled Kombirundfahrt ticket pairing the hop-on hop-off bus with a 90-minute Weisse Flotte cruise from the Lange Brücke harbor, gliding past Babelsberg Palace, Glienicke Bridge, the Sacrow Church of the Redeemer and the Marble Palace. If a single day covers both a bus loop and a boat ride anyway, this combo usually costs less than booking each separately, and a Potsdam boat cruise can be booked on its own if you’d rather split the two across different days.
Historic tram rides
ViP, the local transit operator, maintains a fleet of restored 1950s and 1960s streetcars that occasionally run scenic loops through the city center for special occasions rather than on a fixed daily schedule; check the official historic tram page before planning a trip around one, since availability depends on the calendar rather than being a standing tourist route.
Getting to the bus stop in the first place
None of this matters if you arrive on the wrong ticket. Potsdam sits in transit Zone C, so a Berlin AB ticket is not valid, you need the ABC version: a single ticket runs 5 EUR, or 12.90 EUR for a 24-hour ABC pass, current as of the January 2026 fare rise, per VBB’s official pricing . The S7 S-Bahn takes about 40 minutes from central Berlin stations; the RE1 regional express does the same trip in 25.
Verdict: first-time visitors with one day should take the standard hop-on hop-off loop and add the boat leg through the Kombirundfahrt ticket rather than booking the cruise separately later. Save the Alter Fritz tour for a return trip once the geography is already familiar.
One concrete tip: buy the ABC ticket before you board the S-Bahn in Berlin, not after, since ticket machines at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof get crowded right as each train empties out.
