Jaipur has three personalities, and the one you meet depends on the month you land.

Everything is open and the days suit long outdoor stops. This is balloon season, with sunrise flights over the Amber valley at about INR 7,500-15,000 per person on a shared basket, depending on weather and operator, and Viator lists the flights . Nahargarh Fort at sunset costs about INR 600 for foreign adults and shows the whole street grid lighting up. Amber Fort is about INR 1,000, while Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Albert Hall are about INR 600 each. A two-day composite ticket for those five is roughly INR 1,000-1,700, so confirm the price at the ticket office. City Palace has its own tiered ticket.

April to June: plan around the heat

Midday temperatures reach 40-45C, and the ramparts at Amber, Jaigarh and Nahargarh have almost no shade. Be at the forts between 07:00 and 10:30, or after 17:00. Spend the hours between in air-conditioned or covered places: the galleries of City Palace, Albert Hall Museum, or a long lunch. Drink only sealed bottled water, which costs about INR 20 a litre. One small consolation for the season is the e-visa, which costs US$10 for 30 days from April to June against US$25 from July to March. Apply at least four days ahead at the official visa portal .

Monsoon, July to September

Balloon flights are usually not flown in the rains, and Ranthambore’s core safari zones are closed, though the outer buffer zones stay open. The city itself carries on, and the colour of the Aravalli hills changes. Use the wet months for the covered attractions: Albert Hall Museum with its carpets, weapons and Egyptian mummy, the City Palace galleries and the Amrapali jewellery museum. The Teej and Gangaur processions, with decorated camels, horses and folk dancers, fall in the spring and monsoon months and are worth timing a trip around.

Costs nothing in any month

The old-city bazaar walk through Bapu, Johari and Tripolia bazaars.
The Jal Mahal promenade on Amer Road. The palace sits in Man Sagar Lake and is a view from the shore, with no entry inside.

Galta Ji, the hillside temple complex at the edge of town. Entry is free, with a camera donation expected. Dress modestly and leave the macaques alone.

Getting up Amber’s hill

Elephant rides up to Amber still operate, but a Rajasthan High Court case over elephant welfare is pending and welfare groups object to the rides. Walk the paved ramp through the Sun Gate, or share a jeep at roughly INR 100-200 a seat.

One tip for choosing dates
