If you love stone and symmetry: Abhaneri
Chand Baori is a stepwell about 85-95 km east of Jaipur, roughly two hours by road. It drops 13 levels, with about 3,500 narrow steps in geometric patterns that plunge around 20 metres. If you love ruins and legends: Bhangarh
The ruined 17th-century fort and town of Bhangarh sits on the same road as Abhaneri, so the two pair well in one day, and you can compare organised tours on Viator . The site is closed between sunset and sunrise, so plan to arrive well before dark. A private car for the pair is about INR 3,500-5,000, which is the best value if you split it between a few people.
If you come for pilgrimage: Pushkar and Ajmer
Pushkar is about 135 km west, 2.5-3 hours by road. It centres on a sacred lake with 52 bathing ghats and the 14th-century Brahma Temple, one of very few dedicated to the creator god. Ajmer, close by, has the white marble Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, where visitors of every faith come. Cover your head, dress modestly and leave shoes outside, and be wary of touts selling flower offerings at inflated prices. A private car for both is about INR 4,000-6,000.
If you want palaces and craft: Samode
Samode is about an hour north. The 475-year-old Samode Palace has a mirror-work Durbar Hall, painted frescoes and terraced gardens in the Mughal style. It is the shortest drive of the lot and suits travellers who prefer a lazy day to a long one.
If you want something closer: Galta Ji
At the city’s own edge, the Galta Ji temple complex sits in a narrow gorge with natural springs and a lively troop of macaques. It is free to enter, with a camera donation requested, and open from early morning. Keep food hidden, do not touch the monkeys, and wear modest clothing. It fits easily into half a day. Amber Fort belongs to a UNESCO-listed group of hill forts and makes a short outing rather than a day trip.
Trips that need a night
Agra and Ranthambore both sit too far for a comfortable return in one go. Agra is 240 km away and takes 4-5 hours each way. Ranthambore is 3.5-4 hours by road, and its safari zones need advance online booking, so treat both as overnight stays. Our page on multi-day trips covers them.

- Leave by 07:30 so that the heat is behind you, and carry sealed bottled water.
- Fix the car price before the engine starts, and confirm whether it includes waiting time.
- Combine a day trip with the city’s sightseeing only if you have four or more days.
- Tip: choose Abhaneri and Bhangarh if you only have one free day, because the road is the easiest and the sights complement each other.
