Jaipur Multi-Day Trips: Slow to Ambitious

How much road you want decides what kind of multi-day trip works, so start with your appetite for driving.

Slow: one base, several day outings

Stay four or five nights in Jaipur and make short outings from the same hotel. The city and Amber fill two days on the composite ticket, which is roughly INR 1,000-1,700 for foreign adults and valid for two consecutive days, so confirm the price at the ticket office. Add Abhaneri and Bhangarh for a third day (a private car is about INR 3,500-5,000) and Samode, about an hour north, for a fourth. You unpack once and the longest drive is two hours.

There is no metro station at the airport. The Pink Line runs only between Mansarovar and Badi Chaupar, so plan a taxi on arrival.

Balanced: add a night in Pushkar

Pushkar lies about 135-140 km west, 2.5-3 hours by road. It works as a long day, but a night lets you watch the ghats at dusk and dawn, with 52 of them around the sacred lake, and visit Ajmer’s Dargah on the way. Cover your head and shoulders at the shrine, and leave shoes at the door. This version suits people with six or seven days.

Ambitious: Ranthambore and Agra

Both are real trips that need a night. Ranthambore is about 180-200 km away, 3.5-4 hours by road. The core safari zones, numbers 1 to 5, reopened on 1 October, and the buffer zones stay open through the monsoon. Agra is 240 km east, 4-5 hours each way. That is 9-10 hours in a vehicle in one day, so most travellers sleep over and see the Taj Mahal at first light. Jaipur to Delhi is about 280 km, 4.5-5 hours by road, which makes the Delhi, Agra, Jaipur loop a classic way to link the three.

Going further in Rajasthan

Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer make up the longer desert-and-lakes circuit beyond Jaipur. Each is a large leg in its own right, so allow two nights apiece and book trains or a car and driver ahead of time.

Visas for a longer stay

The 30-day e-visa for most Western passports costs US$25 from July to March and US$10 from April to June, plus a bank charge of about 3 percent. A one-year visa is US$40. Apply at least four days ahead at the government e-visa site .

Practical tips

  • Break any drive over three hours with a stop, and avoid driving after dark.
  • Book a driver for the whole loop rather than each leg to save negotiation time.
