Laos Activities by Type of Day

Advisory, October 2026: The UK government advises against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun province, where attacks and armed clashes have been reported. Across rural Laos, ordnance dropped between 1964 and 1973 still lies in the ground, so walk only on marked paths and leave metal objects alone. Visitors have been poisoned by methanol in bars, so buy sealed bottles and cans. Tubing, kayaking and swimming have caused drownings. Laos rewards a slow trip built around three bases: Luang Prabang in the north, Vang Vieng in the middle and Vientiane on the Mekong. This page groups the main activities by the kind of day they make, so you can mix a hands-on morning with an outdoor afternoon.

Season and money

The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable. March and April bring heat and thick smoke in the north. From May to October the rains fill the waterfalls and make every river more dangerous. The currency is the Lao kip (LAK), roughly 22,000 to 22,500 to the US dollar. Carry cash for tickets, tuk-tuks and markets, because cards are mostly taken at hotels, larger restaurants and agencies.

Hands-on days in Luang Prabang

Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts Centre. The centre stands about 2 km from the night market on the Mekong. A free tuk-tuk leaves from the shop next to 3 Nagas between 09:30 and 20:30. Anyone can watch the free weaving and dyeing demonstrations, which run from 11:30 to 12:00 and 16:30 to 17:00. Classes in weaving, natural dyeing, batik and bamboo last from half a day to three days, and reported rates start around USD 35 for a half-day dye class. Tamarind. This Lao restaurant and cooking school sits on the Nam Khan at Ban Wat Sene. The restaurant serves from 11:00 to 22:00, Monday to Saturday, and shuts on Sundays. A class starts with a market visit and moves on to cooking with a Lao chef, and a half day is reported at about USD 35. Check Tamarind’s site for dates.

A climb for the view

Mount Phousi. Visitors climb 328 steps to the stupa of That Chomsi. The hill opens from about 06:00 to 18:00 depending on the season. A foreigner ticket costs 30,000 LAK until 14 November 2026 and 60,000 LAK from 15 November. Sunset is the busy hour, so an early start gives you the summit more quietly.

Water days in Vang Vieng

Tubing on the Nam Song. The rental office is on Kangmuong Street near the Paradise hotel. A tube costs 60,000 to 80,000 LAK, plus a 60,000 LAK refundable deposit that you recover if the tube is back by closing time (reports say 18:00 or 20:00). Allow three to five hours, depending on how long you stop at the riverside bars. The old swings and slides were taken down in 2012, so do not jump or dive. Ask for a life jacket and wear it in the wet season from June to October, when the current is stronger, and skip the float after heavy rain.

Blue Lagoons. Lagoon 1 is about 7 km west of town, Lagoon 2 about 11 km and Lagoon 3 about 16 km, over a rough road. Each charges about 20,000 LAK to enter. Jump platforms or swings stand at Lagoons 1 and 2, while Lagoon 3 offers rafts and a zip line. Weak swimmers can rent a life jacket for about 10,000 LAK.

Over the valley

Hot-air ballooning. Flights over the Nathong Valley run from mid-September to May, and adult tickets are reported at about USD 120 to 150. Authorities suspended balloon and paramotor flights from late February to mid-March 2026. On 26 March a sunset balloon hit high-voltage lines and cut power to thousands of homes, with no injuries. The Prime Minister then ordered specific rules for both activities on 7 April, as the Laotian Times reported. Operators now fly under tighter oversight, so ask which rules apply on your date.

Rules for the road

  • Swim only in signed pools at waterfalls, and stay out of the Mekong.
  • Choose factory-sealed drinks and turn down free shots.
  • Rent a motorbike only if you ride confidently, keep to daylight, confirm that your insurance covers it, and never hand over your passport as a deposit.
  • Luang Prabang ticket prices rise in mid-November 2026, so confirm the figure at the gate.
