Montenegro Activities by Budget and Effort

Most of what Montenegro offers can be sorted by two questions: what does it cost, and how much energy does it take? Sorting that way helps you fill a few days without overspending or burning out in the summer heat. Prices below are in euros, the only currency accepted anywhere in the country, and they are rounded figures that can change, so confirm them close to your dates.

Activities That Cost Nothing

Kotor’s Old Town is free to enter through any of its three gates, and wandering the squares and alleys needs no ticket at all. Morača Monastery, on the main road between Podgorica and Kolašin, has free admission to its grounds, which hold 13th-century frescoes; a small treasury museum there charges roughly €2 to €3. It is a working Orthodox monastery, so cover shoulders and knees and keep your voice low. The Kamenari to Lepetane ferry across the Verige Strait takes foot passengers and cyclists free of charge, while cars pay about €5.

Small Tickets, Under €10

• Njegoš Mausoleum: the resting place of the poet-prince Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, on Jezerski Vrh in Lovćen National Park. It costs €8, on top of about €3 for the park, and is reached by 461 steps. Expect it to be open in the ice-free months only. Visit quietly, as this is a national shrine.
• Cetinje museums: King Nikola’s Palace is about €5 and the Biljarda museum about €3.
• Budva Citadela: about €3.50, and the ticket includes a small maritime museum.
• Our Lady of the Rocks: a water taxi from Perast is about €5 to €10 return, and the church adds roughly €3.
• Black Lake: a wooden rowboat is around €8 an hour, plus the €5 Durmitor park fee.

Mid-Range Days, €10 to €30

The walls above Kotor are the classic effort-for-reward climb: 1,350 steps and about 260 meters of height to San Giovanni, around 45 to 60 minutes going up. The ticket is €15 in the main season, bought at the official turnstiles, and the town’s visitor office at kotor.travel lists current hours.

The Kotor to Lovćen cable car is the low-effort alternative, an 11-minute ride from Dub to Kuk at 1,348 meters. Tickets cost €25 return or €14 one way. It runs seasonally, so check dates at kotorcablecar.me before planning around it.

A two-hour boat trip on Lake Skadar from Virpazar typically costs €20 to €30 per person plus the €5 park fee. Aquarium Boka in Dobrota charges €10 for adults and €6 for children, and it is generally open Wednesday to Sunday. A guided cellar tasting at Plantaže, near Podgorica, runs from about €15 to €40 and needs a reservation through plantaze.com .

Bigger Budget, €30 and Up

Shared speedboats to the Blue Cave on the Luštica coast cost roughly €30 to €45 per person, and swimming inside the cave is allowed. Whitewater rafting on the Tara canyon is the biggest single outlay, about €45 to €65 for a 14 km run from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje. That price normally covers equipment, a guide, a transfer and a riverside meal. TaraSport is one of the operators based near the finish.

Matching Effort to the Season

Summer on the coast can pass 35°C, so schedule the wall climb for early morning or the evening and carry at least a liter of water. Rafting is strongest in May and June and warmer from July to September. The cable car and the mausoleum both close down for the cold months.

Park fees are charged per person per day: Durmitor €5, Skadar €5, Biogradska Gora €4, Lovćen and Prokletije €3 each. The annual pass costs €13.50 at the gate or through nparkovi.me , which only beats paying daily if you expect three or more park days.

Getting Between Activities

No passenger trains reach the coast, so use coaches, taxis, rental cars or boats. A Kotor to Budva coach costs about €3.50 to €5 for roughly 45 minutes. Mountain roads are narrow, headlights are required day and night, and driving them after dark is best avoided.
