Ostrog Monastery is Montenegro’s most important pilgrimage site, a working Serbian Orthodox monastery built directly into a cliff face near Danilovgrad. It welcomes Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim visitors alike as a shared place of prayer, and it draws roughly a million visitors a year for exactly that reason: this is a living shrine, not a heritage attraction, and it’s worth treating it that way from the moment you arrive.

The Bay of Kotor is Montenegro’s essential stop: a walled medieval town, a chain of fjord-like inlets, and a baroque village reachable only by boat, all inside one UNESCO World Heritage listing since 1979. Two full days cover it properly, Kotor itself plus a boat out to Perast; less than that and you’ll be rushing the wall climb, more than that and you’re better off adding Budva or the interior.

Seven days is the 6-day plan (coast, Njeguši-Lovćen-Cetinje, Skadar, Ostrog, Durmitor’s first day) plus a second morning at Durmitor and the drive back to the coast for a proper last night. That extra day is what turns Durmitor from a bridge-and-lake photo stop into an actual outdoor day: rafting the Tara or a longer hike, your call.

Five days takes the 4-day plan , coast, Njeguši-Lovćen-Cetinje, and Lake Skadar, and adds a fifth day at Ostrog Monastery, Montenegro’s most important pilgrimage site, built into a cliff face in the country’s interior. This is the first version of the itinerary where the tone shifts for one day: Ostrog is a working shrine, not a sightseeing stop, and it’s worth visiting that way.

Two days is enough to hit Montenegro’s essential double act: Kotor’s UNESCO-listed bay on day one, Budva’s beach-and-nightlife coast on day two. It is not enough for the interior, so Cetinje, Lovćen, and Durmitor stay out of this version entirely.
