Tivat Shows and Events Calendar
A 16th-century stone courtyard turns into an open-air theatre stage for two months every summer in Tivat, and most visitors walk straight past the building without knowing it.
Purgatorije: the main event
The Purgatorije Mediterranean Theatre Festival runs from mid-June through late August, staging classical and contemporary theatre, musical plays, and ballet in the Atrium Buca, the courtyard of the 16th-century Buca-Lukovic summer residence. It’s organized by Tivat’s Cultural Centre; check the festival’s own listing or Tivat Travel’s Purgatorije page for the current season’s program. Rooms in Tivat book up fastest during the festival, so compare hotel availability earlier than you would for an ordinary summer week.
Free music along the water
Tivat’s Cultural Summer runs free folklore concerts, classical guitar recitals, and klapa a cappella singing along Pine Promenade and in Donja Lastva through the same summer stretch, with no ticket required for most of it. These are smaller, looser evenings than Purgatorije’s ticketed theatre program, closer to stumbling onto live music on an evening walk than to booking a seat.
Regattas and polo in the marina
Porto Montenegro hosts international sailing regattas and an annual horse polo tournament on the marina’s arena grounds each summer, drawing a very different crowd than the theatre festival a few hundred meters away. Porto Montenegro Yacht Club runs the sailing side of this calendar on J/70 keelboats, so a regatta weekend often overlaps with a normal marina stroll rather than closing anything off to visitors.
Boka Night, next door in Kotor
Boka Night (Bokeljska Noc), held on a Saturday in mid-to-late August, is Kotor’s own event rather than Tivat’s: a century-old parade of illuminated, hand-decorated boats through the bay followed by fireworks and street concerts. It’s 15 minutes from Tivat and free to watch from the shore; Montenegro’s national tourism site posts the confirmed date each year.
The verdict
Purgatorije is worth planning a trip around if theatre matters to you; everything else on this list, the free concerts, the regattas, Boka Night, is worth catching if your dates happen to line up, not a reason to shift a booking.
Before you go
Check the exact festival and Boka Night dates a season ahead rather than assuming last year’s calendar repeats exactly, since both move within their stated windows from one year to the next. For daytime plans on festival days, see the day trips guide .
