Advisory notice: look up the latest US State Department and UK FCDO guidance for Tunisia before booking. Some frontier and military areas are closed to visitors, and insurers may refuse claims for trips that go against FCDO advice. The city and its beach resorts sit outside the FCDO warning zones.

Heritage entry prices were revised on 1 April 2026. Before that change the agency listed 8 TND, 5 TND and 10 TND for non-residents at these three sites, so carry some extra cash and ask at the booth.

If you like wellness

Thalassotherapy is the local specialty. Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse and Hasdrubal Thalassa & Spa Port El Kantaoui both advertise sea-water facilities. Call or email ahead for day-access terms, treatment lists and costs, because they differ by season.

If you like the sea

  • Swimming: use the beaches in town or in the resort strip, and read the flags. Parents should stay within reach of children whether or not a lifeguard is posted.
  • Diving: the dive centre at Port El Kantaoui offers boat dives and introductory sessions on rocky sites, some with wrecks.
  • Boat trips: replica pirate galleons leave the marina for two to four hours, and a few itineraries include a swim stop near the Kuriat islands.

Jellyfish turn up in late summer, so check with a lifeguard before you swim.

If you like shopping

The Medina souks trade in ceramics, olive-wood spoons and bowls, brass lamps, leather slippers and woollen rugs. Ask the price before you accept a glass of tea. If a runner tries to lead you up to a carpet floor, a smile and a firm no are enough.

If you like easy evenings

The Corniche runs beside Plage Boujaafar, and in the evening locals walk it with their families. Port El Kantaoui marina has pedestrian quays for a calmer stroll.

Things that are not on the menu

The Sahel coast is flat, so desert safaris and rock climbing belong to other parts of Tunisia. The Sahara begins over 350 km to the south, near Douz.

Basics

  • Dinars (TND) are the only currency for daily spending. Exchange on arrival and keep the slips.
  • Visit sights early, since midsummer afternoons are very hot.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at religious sites.
