Almaty Ticketed Attractions and Museum Fees
Almaty’s paid attractions are easiest to plan by what they cost and how long they take. The cheapest are small museums in the lower city, the mid-range sits on the hills above town, and the most expensive is the full ropeway to Shymbulak. Amounts below are in Kazakh tenge (KZT); expect roughly 470 to 490 KZT per US dollar this year. Children usually pay far less, and foreign adults pay more than local residents at the state museums.
Smaller museum visits
Ykylas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. The address is Zenkov Street 24a, and it is open Tuesday to Sunday. An adult pays about 1,000 KZT, a student 500 KZT, a pensioner 300 KZT, and children go in free. Opening hours differ from one listing to the next, so confirm them before travelling.
Kasteyev State Museum of Arts. You will find it in the Koktem-3 microdistrict at 22/1. It welcomes visitors Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with the ticket desk closing at 17:30. It is shut on Mondays and on the last day of each month. Adults pay about 2,000 KZT and foreign adults about 5,000 KZT, while students and pensioners pay about 1,000 KZT and schoolchildren about 500 KZT. The building has reopened after reconstruction, so a quick check of hours is wise.
The Central State Museum
This is the city’s largest museum, in the Samal-1 microdistrict, building 44. Doors open at 09:00 and close at 18:00, with the last ticket sold at 17:30, and Tuesday is the day off. A standard adult ticket for halls 1 to 4 is 1,500 KZT. Foreign citizens pay 5,000 KZT for every hall without a guide, or 10,000 KZT if they join an overview tour in Kazakh, Russian or English. Two halls carry their own prices: the Gold Collection, which tells the story of Saka gold and the Golden Man, is 1,500 KZT with a guided tour, and the Golden Horde hall is 2,000 KZT. Schoolchildren pay 300 KZT and preschoolers enter free. The full tariff is on csmrk.kz .
Hill and mountain lifts
Kok-Tobe cable car. The cableway is 1,620 m long and uses 17 cabins. You can board at Dostyk Avenue 104B or at Omarova Street 41, and the operator’s page is koktobe.com . An adult return is about 10,000 KZT and a one-way ticket about 6,000 KZT. Children aged 6 to 12 pay about 5,000 KZT return, and under 5s ride free. Park entry costs nothing. The TV tower is closed, so the reward at the top is the view and the rides: the Fast Coaster at about 7,000 KZT for adults, and the Ferris wheel at about 4,000 KZT.
Shymbulak ropeways. The Shymbulak Ticket covers the Medeu gondola plus Combi-1 and Combi-2, reaching about 3,200 m. An adult pays 12,000 KZT return or 7,000 KZT one way, and a child aged 6 to 14 pays 4,000 KZT return. Buying only the two upper ropeways at the Shymbulak station costs 7,000 KZT for adults and 3,000 KZT for children, return. The KKD-4 chairlift is an extra 6,000 KZT, or 15,000 KZT on the extended ticket. Fares peak from 25 December to 11 January, and low season runs about 30 percent lower. Lifts pause for maintenance in spring and from mid-October to about 1 November, so consult shymbulak.com first.
A gorge walk with a small fee
The Ayusai visitor centre sits in the Ile-Alatau park, about 30 minutes from the centre on the way to the Big Almaty Gorge. The eco-post fee was 506 KZT on a 2025 listing. The trail past three waterfalls is roughly 8 to 10 km return, or 2 to 3 hours. It is a separate stop from the Big Almaty Lake checkpoint.
Practical tips
- Cards and Kaspi QR work nearly everywhere, but keep small notes for park gates and kiosks.
- Check lift status the day before, since weather and servicing both stop the ropeways.
- Carry your original passport on mountain days and stay on marked trails, as avalanche and rockfall risk is real above the tree line.
