3 Days in Almaty: First-Timer Plan

Three days is the sweet spot for a first Almaty trip: two days for the walkable city core, plus one easy mountain day. This version adds Medeu and Shymbulak on day three since it needs no tour, just a bus and a gondola ticket. With less time, drop day three and use the 2-day itinerary ; with more, the 4-day itinerary adds a full nature day on top of this same spine.

Day 1: Panfilov Park to Kok-Tobe
Morning
Start at Panfilov Park, home to the WWII Memorial of Glory, the eternal flame, and the Zenkov (Ascension) Cathedral, a roughly 56m wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral built in 1907 without a single nail.
Afternoon
Walk to the Green Bazaar, a working market since 1875: three floors of dried fruit, spices, horse meat and kazy sausage, kurt (dried salted cheese), and Koryo-saram vendors selling morkovcha carrot salad. Then walk the Arbat (Zhibek Zholy), the pedestrian street with a Viktor Tsoi memorial wall.
Evening
Have a Kazakh meal, and don’t skip beshbarmak if it’s offered, the national dish of boiled meat (traditionally horse) over wide noodles; lamb and beef versions exist too. Ride Kok-Tobe’s 6-minute cable car up for sunset over the city and the Tian Shan mountains behind it.
Day 2: Republic Square and museums
Morning
Head to Republic Square, anchored by the Independence Monument, a golden Saka warrior on a winged snow leopard referencing the 1969 “Golden Man” find. The Central State Museum next door holds a replica of the Golden Man (closed Tuesdays, verify current hours).
Afternoon
Add the Kasteyev State Museum of Arts (closed Mondays), then the Central Mosque (modest dress, visitors welcome outside prayer times) and the fountains of First President’s Park.
Evening
An early dinner sets you up for day three, which starts with a bus ride out of the center. Pick up any last souvenirs, including a bar of Rakhat chocolate, the local brand.
Day 3: Medeu and Shymbulak
Morning
Take bus 12 out to Medeu, the world-famous high-altitude outdoor ice rink at roughly 1,691m, with a steep anti-mudflow dam staircase alongside it worth the climb for the view alone.
Afternoon
From Medeu, ride the gondola up to Shymbulak, Central Asia’s largest ski resort, open year-round for the views even outside ski season (roughly $10-25 round trip, tiered, verify current pricing). Non-skiers ride just for the panorama; the trip up takes about 25-30 minutes base to summit.
Evening
Head back down to Almaty by bus 12 for a final dinner in the city. If Shymbulak left you wanting more mountain time, the 4-day itinerary adds a dedicated nature day next.
Getting around and where to stay
Base yourself near the Green Bazaar or the Arbat for days one and two; bus 12 to Medeu runs from the city, so no change of base is needed for day three. Yandex Go, not Uber, which doesn’t operate in Kazakhstan, covers everything the metro doesn’t. Pay by card or Kaspi QR almost everywhere, but carry some cash for the bazaar and the gondola ticket counter.
One concrete tip: buy the Shymbulak gondola ticket at the Medeu base station rather than online in advance, since tiered pricing and hours can shift and the counter reflects the current rate.
