7 Days in Slovakia: First-Timer Plan

Seven days is the full cross-country version of the 6-day itinerary , adding a dedicated day for the Slovenský raj gorges between the High Tatras and Spiš Castle. The route still runs one direction, Bratislava in the far west to Košice in the east, roughly 4-5 hours apart by road, so plan a one-way flight or train home from the east rather than looping back. A car gives the most flexibility for this route, though trains and buses connect every stop.
Get the basics straight before you go: Slovakia is not Slovenia, and it split peacefully from the Czech Republic on 1 January 1993, the “Velvet Divorce.”

Day 1: Bratislava Old Town
Morning
Bratislava Castle over the Danube, then St Martin’s Cathedral.
Afternoon
The Main Square (Hlavné námestie), Michael’s Gate, and the bronze Čumil statues around the Old Town.
Evening
Dinner in the Old Town; the euro (€) has been the currency since 2009.
Day 2: Devin Castle and the Danube
Morning
Bus 29 to Devín Castle, ruins at the Danube-Morava confluence, destroyed by Napoleon’s forces in 1809.
Afternoon
The UFO Bridge (Most SNP) observation deck.
Evening
An early night before the drive east.
Day 3: Banská Štiavnica
Morning
Travel to Banská Štiavnica, a UNESCO-listed mining town, roughly 2-3 hours from Bratislava.
Afternoon
Walk the old town; Bojnice Castle, a fairytale-style 19th-century rebuild, is a worthwhile detour if you’re driving this leg.
Evening
Continue toward the Tatras region for the night.
Day 4: High Tatras
Morning
Arrive in the High Tatras. Lomnický štít is reachable by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica; Slovakia’s true highest peak, Gerlachovský štít, legally requires a certified guide to climb.
Afternoon
A marked trail around Štrbské Pleso or up from the Hrebienok funicular. Stick to marked trails, avoid hiking after dark, and make noise on blind corners; a fatal brown bear attack in the nearby Low Tatras in March 2024 makes this a genuine, monitored risk. High-altitude trails run roughly June-October.
Evening
Dinner in the resort village; the TEŽ narrow-gauge railway links the Tatra villages without a car.
Day 5: Slovenský raj
Morning
Head to Slovenský raj (Slovak Paradise), a national park of limestone gorges fitted with ladders, chains, and catwalks alongside waterfalls. The Suchá Belá gorge trail, about 3.7km and 2 hours one-way climbing up, is a good full-morning route.
Afternoon
If it’s between 15 May and 30 September, Dobšinská Ice Cave, part of a wider UNESCO cave listing, is only open in this window; check ahead since it’s closed the rest of the year.
Evening
Return to your Tatras base or continue toward Spišské Podhradie for the next day.
Day 6: Spis Castle and Levoča
Morning
Spiš Castle, about 30-40 minutes from Poprad, one of Central Europe’s largest castle complexes by area, part of a UNESCO listing shared with Levoča. See our Spis Castle guide for current opening hours.
Afternoon
Walk Levoča’s old town, then continue on toward Košice.
Evening
Arrive in Košice for the night.
Day 7: Košice
Morning
St Elisabeth Cathedral, Slovakia’s largest church, on Košice’s main square in the old town.
Afternoon
Walk the historic center at an easy pace; Košice was a European Capital of Culture in 2013.
Evening
A farewell dinner before departing from Košice (KSC).
Getting around and where to stay
This route runs one direction west to east: Bratislava, Banská Štiavnica, the High Tatras, Slovenský raj, Spiš Castle, and Košice. Trains (ZSSK) and buses reach every stop; a car adds flexibility for Bojnice and the gorge trailheads but needs the mandatory e-vignette on motorway sections. Košice’s airport (KSC) makes a natural end point.
One concrete tip: check the Dobšinská Ice Cave’s 15 May-30 September window before you build day 5 around it. Outside that window, plan the Slovenský raj day around the gorge trail alone rather than the cave.
