6 Days in Slovakia: First-Timer Plan

Six days is a proper cross-country road trip: Bratislava in the far west, central Slovakia, the High Tatras, Spiš Castle, and Košice in the east, covering the roughly 4-5 hours / 330-400km that separate the two ends of the country. This builds on the 5-day plan ’s structure and adds a full day in Košice at the end rather than doubling back. A car works well for this route, but so do trains and buses if you’d rather not drive; either way, don’t try to compress the transfers, since they’re most of what makes this trip a road trip. Book these before you go

Day 1: Bratislava Old Town

Morning

Bratislava Castle over the Danube, then St Martin’s Cathedral.

Afternoon

The Main Square (Hlavné námestie), Michael’s Gate, and the bronze Čumil statues.

Evening

Dinner in the Old Town; the euro (€) is the currency, in use since 2009.

Day 2: Devin Castle and the Danube

Morning

Bus 29 to Devín Castle, ruins at the Danube-Morava confluence, destroyed by Napoleon’s forces in 1809.

Afternoon

The UFO Bridge (Most SNP) observation deck.

Evening

An early night ahead of the drive east.

Day 3: Banská Štiavnica

Morning

Drive or bus to Banská Štiavnica, a UNESCO-listed mining town, roughly 2-3 hours from Bratislava.

Afternoon

Walk the old town; if you’re driving and have time, Bojnice Castle, a fairytale-style 19th-century rebuild, is a detour worth considering on this leg.

Evening

Continue toward the Tatras or overnight in the region before pressing on.

Day 4: High Tatras

Morning

Reach the High Tatras; Lomnický štít is reachable by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, the easy way to a near-summit view without the guide required for Gerlachovský štít, Slovakia’s actual highest peak.

Afternoon

Hike a marked trail around Štrbské Pleso or up from the Hrebienok funicular at Starý Smokovec. Stick to marked trails, hike in daylight and in a group where possible, and make noise on blind corners; a fatal brown bear attack in the nearby Low Tatras in March 2024 is a real, ongoing concern here, not exaggerated caution. High-altitude trails are open roughly June-October.

Evening

Dinner in the resort village; the TEŽ narrow-gauge railway connects the Tatra villages if you’d rather not drive between them.

Day 5: Spis Castle and Levoča

Morning

Spiš Castle, about 30-40 minutes from Poprad, one of Central Europe’s largest castle complexes by area, part of a UNESCO listing shared with Levoča. Check our Spis Castle guide for current hours.

Afternoon

Walk Levoča’s old town, then continue east to Košice, another hour or so.

Evening

Arrive in Košice and settle in for the night.

Day 6: Košice

Morning

St Elisabeth Cathedral, Slovakia’s largest church, at the heart of Košice’s old town.

Afternoon

Walk the historic center; Košice was a European Capital of Culture in 2013 and has a compact, walkable core.

Evening

A farewell dinner before departing from Košice (KSC) or continuing on.

Getting around and where to stay

This route runs one direction, west to east: Bratislava, Banská Štiavnica, the High Tatras, Spiš Castle, and Košice, each leg a few hours by car, train, or bus. Trains (ZSSK) and buses connect all five stops; a car adds flexibility for Bojnice and the smaller villages but requires the e-vignette on motorway sections. Košice’s airport (KSC) is a natural end point rather than looping back to Bratislava.

One concrete tip: keep day 4’s hike to a marked trail with a clear turnaround time. Tatra weather changes fast, and the point of this day is the mountains, not covering ground you’ll need again the next morning for Spiš Castle.
