5 Days in Slovakia: First-Timer Plan
Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. Book or buy through them and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only point you to things we would actually use.
Five days adds a stop in the middle of the country to the 4-day plan ’s two-region structure: Bratislava in the west, Banská Štiavnica in central Slovakia, then the High Tatras and Spiš Castle in the east. It’s still a one-direction trip, not a loop, so plan your flight home from Poprad-Tatry (TAT) or Košice (KSC) rather than doubling back to Bratislava, unless you’d rather retrace the route. For the full cross-country version with more stops, see the 6-day or 7-day itineraries.
Two things to keep straight before you go: Slovakia isn’t Slovenia, and it split from the Czech Republic on 1 January 1993, not some other date.
Book these before you go
- A place to stay in Bratislava’s Old Town
- A hotel near Poprad or the High Tatras
- A Spis Castle or High Tatras day tour
- If you’re driving, get the mandatory motorway e-vignette at eznamka.sk before you set off
- ETIAS is still not required as of 2026 (check before you travel); the EES biometric border step is already live
Day 1: Bratislava Old Town
Morning
Bratislava Castle over the Danube, then St Martin’s Cathedral, the old coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary.
Afternoon
The Main Square (Hlavné námestie), Michael’s Gate, and the bronze Čumil statues around the Old Town.
Evening
Dinner in the Old Town; the euro (€) has been the currency since 2009 and cards are widely accepted.
Day 2: Devin Castle and the Danube
Morning
Bus 29 to Devín Castle, ruins at the Danube-Morava confluence, destroyed by Napoleon’s forces in 1809.
Afternoon
The UFO Bridge (Most SNP) observation deck for a river-level view of the Old Town.
Evening
An early dinner and an early night ahead of tomorrow’s drive or train east.
Day 3: Banská Štiavnica
Morning
Travel to Banská Štiavnica, a UNESCO-listed historic mining town in central Slovakia, roughly 2-3 hours from Bratislava.
Afternoon
Walk the old mining town’s streets and squares; it’s a compact, walkable stop, so a half-day covers the core easily.
Evening
Dinner in town, then continue toward the Tatras the next morning.
Day 4: The High Tatras
Morning
Continue east to Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras, a further few hours’ drive or train ride. The country is long east-west, so build the transfer time into your day rather than planning activities either side of it.
Afternoon
Settle in and walk the lake, or take the funicular up from Starý Smokovec if you arrive with daylight to spare. High-altitude marked trails are open roughly June-October; mountain weather changes fast, so check conditions before you commit to anything longer.
Evening
An early dinner; the resort villages are linked by the narrow-gauge TEŽ railway if you want to move between them without a car.
Day 5: Spis Castle and Levoča
Morning
Spiš Castle, about 30-40 minutes from Poprad, one of Central Europe’s largest castle complexes by area and part of a UNESCO listing shared with the nearby town of Levoča. See our Spis Castle guide for current opening hours before you go.
Afternoon
Walk Levoča’s old town, then head to Poprad-Tatry or Košice for your onward flight, or back toward Bratislava if you’re retracing the route.
Evening
A last dinner near your departure point.
Getting around and where to stay
This is a one-direction, west-to-east trip: Bratislava’s Old Town is walkable, Banská Štiavnica is a compact stop worth a half-day, and the Tatra villages connect by the TEŽ railway once you’re there. Budget 2-3 hours for Bratislava to Banská Štiavnica and a further few hours on to the Tatras. If you’re driving any motorway sections, the e-vignette is mandatory.
One concrete tip: don’t try to add Banská Štiavnica as a same-day stop between Bratislava and the Tatras. Split it across two travel days as above; trying to do both drives in one day makes for a long, tiring stretch with no time in the town itself.
