6 Days in Sao Tome and Principe

The US State Department raised São Tomé and Príncipe to Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” on April 8, 2026, over 2026 election season unrest risk (legislative elections are still pending for late September 2026) and very limited medical and evacuation capacity on both islands. The UK FCDO’s advice is milder, low crime, only occasional and localized unrest, no history of terrorism, but check your own government’s current advisory before booking and avoid demonstrations around the election dates. Serious medical cases evacuate to Libreville, Gabon, and can run past $40,000, so comprehensive travel and evacuation insurance is essential, and malaria is a genuine year round risk on both islands. This is a rewarding but remote, low infrastructure trip best planned with precaution first.

Six days is the shortest sensible split across both islands, roughly four days on São Tomé and two on Príncipe, connected by the inter-island flight.

Day 1: Sao Tome City

Land at São Tomé International Airport (TMS), the sole gateway, reachable intercontinentally only via TAP Air Portugal from Lisbon, plus TAAG from Luanda and regional links from Accra, Libreville, and Lagos. Pay the roughly 20 euro arrival fee in cash, carry a yellow fever certificate only if arriving from a risk country, and keep six months of passport validity. Settle into a city hotel, Pestana São Tomé or Omali Lodge, then spend the afternoon at Fortaleza de São Sebastião, the 1566 fort turned national museum, and the Sé Catedral, with dinner on calulu, palm oil fish or meat stew over rice or funge. Bring euros, the dobra (STN) is pegged around 24.5 to the euro and cards clear at only a small share of businesses.

Day 2: The South Coast

Drive south to Boca do Inferno, a coastal blowhole, then the roadside viewpoints for Pico Cão Grande, a 663 meter volcanic plug rising about 370 meters above the surrounding terrain, a technical climb for experts only, view it from the road rather than plan a summit. Lunch at Roça São João dos Angolares, chef João Carlos Silva’s tasting menu, one of the six UNESCO listed roças, then Praia Jalé, a turtle nesting and conservation beach (green, hawksbill, leatherback, and olive ridley, nesting roughly September through April).

Day 3: North and Centre

Head north along the baobab coast to Lagoa Azul, the Blue Lagoon, for a swim and snorkel, then inland to Roça Monte Café, a coffee estate with a small museum, another of the six UNESCO roças. Finish at the Claudio Corallo shop in the city for a bean-to-bar chocolate and coffee tasting before an early night, tomorrow’s flight leaves early.

Day 4: Fly to Príncipe

Book the STP Airways flight, a 35 to 40 minute hop on a 19 seat turboprop, well ahead, it is near daily but small and weather dependent. Land in Príncipe and settle into Santo António, the tiny capital, before an afternoon at Praia Banana, the classic crescent beach that gives the island its postcard image. Príncipe has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2012, covering the whole island, a separate designation from the 2026 Roças World Heritage Site.

Day 5: Príncipe’s Jungle and Roças

Spend the day in the Biosphere’s jungle interior, quiet trails and empty beaches, and visit Roça Sundy, one of the six 2026 UNESCO roças and the site of the 1919 Eddington eclipse observation that confirmed Einstein’s general relativity, a genuinely documented piece of science history. Roça Belo Monte, another of the six, is now a restored resort worth a look even as a non-guest visit. Whale watching runs late July through October from shore near Bom Bom and Sundy Praia, and dolphins are seen year round.

Day 6: Fly Back and Depart

Take the morning STP Airways flight back to São Tomé, build in a buffer, the route is weather dependent, then connect onward from São Tomé International Airport.

  • Your e-visa or visa free entry, plus a yellow fever certificate if routing through a risk country
