3 Days in Sao Tome and Principe

The US State Department raised São Tomé and Príncipe to Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” on April 8, 2026, citing political unrest risk tied to the 2026 election season (legislative elections are still pending for late September 2026) plus very limited medical and evacuation capacity. The UK FCDO takes a milder line, low crime, only occasional and localized unrest, no history of terrorism, but check your own government’s current advisory before booking and steer clear of any demonstrations around the election dates. Medical care is genuinely thin here, serious cases evacuate to Libreville, Gabon, and can cost past $40,000, so travel and evacuation insurance is not optional, and malaria is a real year round risk, not a seasonal one. Treat this as a rewarding but remote trip that rewards a well planned, precaution first approach.
Three days gives you the capital plus a full day exploring the south coast, still all on São Tomé island. Príncipe and the deep interior need the longer itineraries below.
Day 1: Sao Tome City
Land at São Tomé International Airport (TMS), served intercontinentally only by TAP Air Portugal from Lisbon, with TAAG from Luanda and regional links from Accra, Libreville, and Lagos. Pay the roughly 20 euro arrival fee in cash, carry a yellow fever certificate only if arriving from a risk country, and keep six months of passport validity.
Check into a São Tomé city hotel, then walk to Fortaleza de São Sebastião, the 1566 fort turned national museum, and the Sé Catedral. Browse the central market and the colonial waterfront, and have dinner on calulu, palm oil fish or meat stew over rice or funge, São Tomé’s national dish. Remember this is a cash economy, bring euros, the dobra (STN) is pegged around 24.5 to the euro and cards work at only a small share of businesses.
Day 2: Lagoa Azul and Água Izé
Head roughly 30 minutes north to Lagoa Azul, a rocky blue lagoon cove with a signature baobab and easy snorkeling. On the way back, stop at Roça Água Izé, one of the six estates on the new UNESCO Roças World Heritage listing, “The Roças of São Tomé and Príncipe: Colonial Agricultural System and Forced Migration,” inscribed in July 2026, the country’s first ever World Heritage Site. By 1900 São Tomé was the world’s top cocoa producer on brutal forced labor, which is exactly why Cadbury and Fry boycotted its cocoa in 1909, a history the roças now confront rather than hide.
A local guide and 4x4, budget 40 to 60 euros a day, is the norm for both stops, roads are unsigned and rough away from the city center.
Day 3: The South Coast
This is the full south day. Start at Boca do Inferno, a coastal blowhole, then continue about two hours south for the roadside viewpoints of Pico Cão Grande, a 663 meter volcanic plug rising roughly 370 meters above the surrounding terrain. It is a technical climb for experts only, so plan to view it from the southern road rather than attempt the summit.
Have lunch at Roça São João dos Angolares, home to chef João Carlos Silva’s tasting menu restaurant, the one genuine fine dining table in the country. Finish at Praia Jalé, a turtle nesting and conservation beach run in part by Programa Tatô, not a swim resort, nesting season runs roughly September through April depending on the species (green, hawksbill, leatherback, and olive ridley all nest here, not loggerhead).
