5 Days in Sao Tome and Principe

The US State Department raised São Tomé and Príncipe to Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” on April 8, 2026, citing 2026 election season unrest risk (legislative elections remain pending for late September 2026) and very limited medical and evacuation capacity. The UK FCDO’s line is milder, low crime, only occasional and localized unrest, no history of terrorism, but check your own government’s current advisory before booking and avoid demonstrations around the election dates. Serious medical cases evacuate to Libreville, Gabon, and can cost past $40,000, so comprehensive travel and evacuation insurance is essential, and malaria is a real year round risk regardless of season. Go into this well informed, it is a genuinely rewarding trip for a well planned, precaution first visitor.

Five days lets you cover all of São Tomé island, city, south, north, and centre, plus one deeper add on. This version heads to Ilhéu das Rolas and the equator. If you would rather use the extra day on Príncipe, jump to the 6-day itinerary below instead.

Day 1: Sao Tome City

Land at São Tomé International Airport (TMS), served intercontinentally only by TAP Air Portugal from Lisbon, with TAAG from Luanda and regional links from Accra, Libreville, and Lagos. Pay the roughly 20 euro arrival fee in cash, carry a yellow fever certificate only if arriving from a risk country, and keep six months of passport validity. Settle into a city hotel, then spend the afternoon at Fortaleza de São Sebastião, the 1566 fort turned national museum, and the Sé Catedral, with dinner on calulu, the national palm oil stew.

Day 2: The South Coast

Drive south to Boca do Inferno, a coastal blowhole, then the roadside viewpoints for Pico Cão Grande, a 663 meter volcanic plug, technical climb only, view it from the road. Lunch at Roça São João dos Angolares, chef João Carlos Silva’s tasting menu, then Praia Jalé, a turtle nesting and conservation beach (green, hawksbill, leatherback, and olive ridley, nesting roughly September through April).

Day 3: North Coast and Lagoa Azul

Head north along the baobab coast to Lagoa Azul, the Blue Lagoon, a rocky cove with easy snorkeling, and consider a stop near Neves for shore whale watching if you are traveling late July through October. A 4x4 with local driver, 40 to 60 euros a day, is standard for these unsigned, rough roads.

Day 4: The Centre

Drive inland to Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden, 1,115 meters up, the trailhead into Obô Natural Park and its endemic birds, the São Tomé grosbeak, dwarf olive ibis, and São Tomé fiscal shrike among roughly 20 endemic species. Visit Roça Monte Café, a coffee estate and one of the six UNESCO listed roças , and finish at Claudio Corallo’s shop in the city for a bean-to-bar chocolate and coffee tasting.

Day 5: Ilhéu das Rolas and the Equator

Head to the southern tip of São Tomé island for the short boat crossing to Ilhéu das Rolas, the islet where the equator crosses, marked by the 1936 Marco do Equador monument. Pestana Equador sits right on the line if you want a night there instead of a day trip, confirm it is operating before you book. Depart from São Tomé International Airport in the afternoon or evening.
