3 Days in Slovakia: First-Timer Plan

Three days stays on the western end of Slovakia rather than trying to reach the High Tatras, which sit some 4-5 hours east by road. This version takes the 2-day Bratislava plan and adds a third day across the border in Vienna, an easy add-on since it’s roughly an hour away by frequent bus or train. With more time to spend, the 4-day itinerary swaps the Vienna day for a transfer east into the mountains instead.

One thing to get straight before you go: Slovakia split from the Czech Republic peacefully on 1 January 1993 (the “Velvet Divorce”), and it isn’t Slovenia, a different country on the Adriatic. Don’t credit Prague’s sights to Bratislava.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Bratislava Old Town

Morning

Walk the Main Square (Hlavné námestie), then up to Bratislava Castle, the hilltop “upturned table” overlooking the Danube. St Martin’s Cathedral, the old coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary, is close by downhill.

Afternoon

Pass through Michael’s Gate, the last of the medieval city gates, and climb its viewing platform. Look for the bronze Čumil statues set into the pavement and walls around the Old Town.

Evening

Dinner in the Old Town. Slovakia has used the euro since 2009; cards are widely accepted, cash helps for small purchases, and a 10% tip is standard.

Day 2: Devin Castle and the Danube

Morning

City bus 29 to Devín Castle, ruins above the Danube-Morava confluence, destroyed by Napoleon’s forces in 1809. Allow 2-3 hours round trip.

Afternoon

Back in the city, ride the elevator up the UFO Bridge (Most SNP) for a Danube-level view of the Old Town and castle from across the river.

Evening

A quieter dinner away from the main square; Bratislava’s low crime rate makes an evening walk along the river fine with normal city precautions.

Day 3: Vienna Day Trip

Morning

Bus or train to Vienna, Austria’s capital, roughly an hour from Bratislava. Both countries are in the Schengen area, so there’s no border stop to plan around.

Afternoon

Spend the day exploring Vienna’s historic center at your own pace; it’s a full day trip, so pick one or two areas rather than trying to cover the whole city.

Evening

Return to Bratislava by evening bus or train for a farewell dinner in the Old Town.

Getting around and where to stay

Bratislava’s Old Town and castle hill are entirely walkable; Devín Castle is a 20-30 minute bus ride on line 29, and Vienna connects by frequent bus or train in about an hour. Carry your passport or a copy of it; Slovak police can ask for ID, and the fine for not having any runs up to €1,600. Tap water is safe everywhere on this route. Stay in or near the Old Town to keep all three days walkable from your hotel.

One concrete tip: book the Vienna leg as a return day trip rather than an overnight. Same-day buses run late enough that you don’t need to pack an overnight bag or give up your Bratislava hotel room for the night.
