7 Days in Djerba: The First-Timer Itinerary

A full week is where Djerba’s mainland side gets its best showcase: this plan runs the 5-day core (Houmt Souk, El Ghriba, Djerbahood, Guellala, Matmata/Tataouine, a beach day), then swaps the 6-day plan ’s Zarzis half-day for a genuine overnight in the Sahara at Ksar Ghilane. If a real desert camp isn’t your thing, the same two days work just as well for an overnight to Tozeur, the Chott el Djerid salt lake, and the Mos Espa Star Wars set, which is too far from Djerba for a day trip either way.

Day 1: Houmt Souk and a first beach
Morning
Houmt Souk’s souks, fondouks, and fish auction, plus the Borj el-Kebir / Ghazi Mustapha Tower (around 8 TND).
Afternoon
A beach block at Sidi Mahrès or Aghir.
Evening
Dinner in Houmt Souk; exchange dinars for the week ahead.
Day 2: El Ghriba, Djerbahood, and Guellala
Morning
El Ghriba Synagogue in Erriadh, a living house of worship, so dress modestly; Djerbahood’s free murals (300+ since 2014) alongside it.
Afternoon
Guellala’s pottery village and museum (around 10 TND).
Evening
An early night ahead of the beach day.
Day 3: Beach, Djerba Explore Park, and Midoun
Morning
A slower beach morning.
Afternoon
Djerba Explore Park (Lalla Hadria Museum, heritage village, crocodile farm at 5pm feeding; around 20 TND) or the Ras Rmel flamingo boat trip in season (November-March). Midoun’s Friday market if the timing lines up.
Evening
Dinner in Midoun or back at your hotel.
Day 4: Matmata and Tataouine
Morning
Cross to the mainland via the El Kantara causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry, and head to Matmata for the troglodyte cave homes, including Hotel Sidi Driss, the interior used for Luke Skywalker’s home in the original Star Wars film.
Afternoon
Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, the fortified ksour granaries behind the name “Tatooine,” often looped with Chenini or Douiret. Budget around 11 hours round trip.
Evening
Return to Djerba; keep dinner simple after the long day, and pack light for tomorrow’s overnight.
Day 5: Beach day
Morning
No agenda beyond the beach: Sidi Mahrès for the resort scene, Aghir or La Seguia for quiet.
Afternoon
Snorkeling, kayaking, or the pool, depending on your hotel.
Evening
An early dinner and an early night; day six starts with a long drive.
Day 6: Depart for the Sahara at Ksar Ghilane
Morning
Head out for Ksar Ghilane, a genuine Sahara oasis well south of Djerba, with camel rides, dunes, and a natural hot spring. It’s day-trip-able in theory, but an overnight camp is far more worthwhile than a same-day round trip. (If you’d rather do Tozeur, the Chott el Djerid salt lake, and the Mos Espa Star Wars set instead, that’s an overnight-only trip too, since it’s roughly 5 hours 40 minutes one-way from Djerba.)
Afternoon
Settle into the desert camp; a dune walk or camel ride as the light softens.
Evening
Dinner at the camp, then time in the hot spring under a sky with none of the coastal light pollution.
Day 7: Return to Djerba
Morning
Head back to Djerba; it’s a long drive, so treat the morning as travel, not sightseeing.
Afternoon
A last beach block once you’re back, since the trip is beach-anchored even with the desert overnight built in.
Evening
A farewell dinner in Houmt Souk or at your hotel before departure.
Getting around and where to stay
Book the Ksar Ghilane (or Tozeur) overnight as an organized trip rather than self-driving; the desert roads and logistics are worth handing to a guide. Rent a car for the island days, and book a separate guided day trip for Matmata/Tataouine. The Zone Touristique suits this length best, since the beach is the spine of four of the seven days.
One concrete tip: don’t schedule anything for the evening you get back from the desert overnight; the drive alone earns a slow last night. And the dinar is a closed currency throughout: exchange on arrival, and keep every receipt, since you’ll need them to convert anything back before you fly home.
