Climbing the Story Bridge
The climb starts from Howard Smith Wharves at 5 Boundary Street, below the Crystalbrook Vincent hotel, and the summit sits about 80 metres above the river. The operator sets a minimum age of 8 and a minimum height of 110 cm. Some resellers print 6 or 10 instead, so confirm the age rule when you book anything for a child. Day climbs begin around $150 for adults, with occasional promotions below that, and twilight and night climbs cost more.
The bridge itself is closed to vehicles from 1 am on Sunday 27 December 2026 until about 18 January 2027 while the southern approach is resurfaced. The eastern footpath stays open to walkers, and the western one closes. If your dates fall in that window, ask the operator whether climbs are running. Council has a Story Bridge restoration page , and bookings go through Story Bridge Adventure Climb .
Koalas without the holding
Lone Pine is at 708 Jesmond Road, Fig Tree Pocket. The sanctuary ended koala holds on 1 July 2024 as its own business decision, so visits now focus on close viewing. Visitors can pay for a Koala Moment, from about $35 to $39 per person, or a Koala Close Up, from $39, which is carer-led with limited sessions. Both are add-ons to the day pass. Kangaroos and wallabies can be hand-fed. The sanctuary site has the current ticket list.
By bus, the sanctuary’s page names route 430 from Ann Street and route 445 from Wickham Terrace. Routes were renumbered in June 2025, so check the TransLink journey planner on 13 12 30. CityCats do not run to Lone Pine.
A river ride to Lone Pine
The Mirimar Koala and River Cruise leaves the Cultural Centre Pontoon on the Southbank Boardwalk. Check-in opens at 8:45 and the boat departs at 9:00. It leaves the sanctuary at 13:30 and docks at South Bank at 14:45, and the fare includes Lone Pine entry. Allow most of a day. This is a commercial service, so the 50 cent TransLink fare does not apply. See the Australian Cruise Group listing for sailing details.
Inside the City Hall clock tower
Tickets are free but must be reserved through Brisbane City Council’s events pages, one per person, children and carers included. Visitors meet at the Museum of Brisbane on Level 3 of City Hall, 64 Adelaide Street. Groups leave about every 15 minutes, riding a cage lift up to the clock faces. Reserve through the Council event page .
St Helena Island
St Helena was Queensland’s high-security convict prison from 1867 to 1932, and it is now a national park. Guided tours run by Brisbane Cruises, the operator Queensland Parks lists, take about 45 minutes to cross from Moreton Bay departure points. A recent operator price was about $89 for adults with lunch or $65 if you bring your own. The visit suits a quiet, factual pace.
