A surprising amount of what draws people to Sydney costs nothing to look at. Here’s the free list, and exactly where it stops being free.
Opera House: exterior free, interior is a ticket
Walk right up to the sails, stand on the forecourt, take the photo, all free and open around the clock. Getting past the doors needs either the guided tour or a ticket to whatever’s performing that night; there’s no casual walk-in past that point.
The Harbour Bridge splits into three prices, not one
Three separate products sit on the same bridge, at three very different prices. Walking or cycling the bridge’s own pedestrian and cycle path costs nothing and needs no booking. The Sydney Harbour BridgeMuseum, the renamed and reopened-2026 version of the old Pylon Lookout, is a paid step up at around $35 adult for a 200-step climb to an 87m platform inside the pylon. BridgeClimb itself, the full ascent over the arch, sits in the low $200s and up and is a wholly different, much longer experience. The free walk gets you across the bridge; the paid climb gets you to the top of the arch, and they aren’t the same ticket.

The Rocks, on foot
Free to wander, cobblestone lanes and colonial buildings included; weekend markets add a reason to stay past a quick pass-through.
Darling Harbour’s waterfront

One safety note worth carrying between stops
If your sightseeing walk drifts anywhere near a beach, treat the flag rule as part of the sightseeing itself, not an afterthought: swim only between the red-and-yellow patrol flags, since rip currents are Australia’s most common cause of coastal drowning. It costs nothing to check which beach is patrolled that day before you leave the harbour behind.
