Stay right on the sand
Raes on Wategos sits directly above the sheltered curve of Wategos Beach, all whitewashed arches and Mediterranean-leaning interiors, with a subterranean day spa and alfresco dining that looks out over dolphin pods working the bay. It is the single most requested address in town for a reason.
Or disappear into the hinterland

Chase the sunset properly
Cape Byron Lighthouse and Fisherman’s Lookout both give an elevated view across Julian Rocks and inland to the Wollumbin caldera as the light drops. Pack a picnic rather than planning dinner around it, since the best light window is short and unpredictable by season. Wategos Beach itself, at sand level, is the quieter fallback if the headland car park is full, which it often is close to sunset.
Go up instead of out
Byron Bay Ballooning runs dawn flights that lift silently over the coastline and the green ridgelines of the caldera as the sun comes up over the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, finishing with a champagne breakfast at Three Blue Ducks. Dress warmer than the daytime forecast suggests; it is genuinely cold at altitude before sunrise even in a warm climate.
The practical side of romance
Book both the restaurant and the accommodation well ahead for anything between December and February, since Byron’s three-storey height limit and small-town scale mean there simply isn’t excess capacity to absorb late bookings. Lighthouse car park space is tight before sunrise and again around sunset; arrive early or plan to walk in from Clarkes Beach instead.
Verdict: a coastal stay at Wategos suits a shorter trip built around the beach and the lighthouse; a hinterland lodge suits a longer, quieter stay where the drive itself becomes part of the getaway. Either way, book the balloon flight first, since it sells out earliest of everything on this list.
