Flemington’s “race that stops a nation” is a public holiday, but only within metropolitan Melbourne, not nationally, a detail worth knowing if you’re timing a trip around it or trying to avoid it. Expect the same accommodation-price effect as the other big sporting dates above.
What this means for a base trip
Every date above pushes CBD hotel prices up and can make popular Great Ocean Road or Phillip Island tour slots harder to find, since day-trippers and city visitors are competing for the same limited seats. If your trip doesn’t need to land on one of these dates specifically, avoiding them makes both the city half and the day-trip half of the plan easier to book. The same logic applies in reverse if you actually want the atmosphere: booking six months out for a Grand Final weekend or Melbourne Cup week trip is realistic, booking six weeks out usually isn’t.
