Truso Valley lies close to South Ossetia, so keep to the signed track, take a passport and never walk toward the line. Rescue in the Georgian mountains can be slow; use a guide on glaciers and summits.

Trips are arranged in one of three ways: at the stand of Delica drivers on the main square, through a guesthouse, or in advance through an online listing. For anything on a glacier or with a pilot, book ahead and ask who the guide or pilot is and what certification they hold.
Level 1: a 4x4 ride to Gergeti Trinity Church
Mitsubishi Delicas shuttle visitors up a paved road, which has existed since 2018, to the church at 2,170 m. A seat in a shared van costs about 15 to 25 GEL, and a whole vehicle about 60 to 100 GEL. The church is free, and its rules are firm: knees and shoulders covered, a long skirt and a head covering for women, bare heads and long trousers for men. Wraps are lent at the entrance. Cameras stay off inside. A short landslide closure is always possible, so confirm before you pay.
Level 2: a day through the northern valley
Tour operators combine Dariali Monastery, Gveleti waterfalls and the church into a single day. The monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel is about 10 km north; it started construction in 2005, partly opened in 2011, and takes 30 to 40 minutes to see. The waterfalls, about 7 km north, take 1.5 to 3 hours. Dariali is close to the Larsi border crossing, where drones are not allowed.
Level 3: Truso Valley
A driver takes you about 15 to 18 km by dirt road, after which you walk on a flat track to Zakagori Fortress, roughly 18 to 22 km there and back. Travertine terraces and cold carbonated springs sit along the way. Guards from the Georgian border service are posted at the fortress. Everyone needs a passport, and a guide can explain whether a free border-zone permit is required beyond the fortress. The valley is the only common day trip near the South Ossetia boundary, so follow the track and stay away from the line. Shuttle seats are about 45 to 50 GEL when a shuttle runs, a taxi about 90 GEL.
Level 4: tandem paragliding
The listed launch is Dedaena Peak above Stepantsminda, and Gudauri has flights too. Check pilot certification, expect weather delays and ask the operator for the price.
Level 5: a Mount Kazbek expedition
Kazbek, at 5,054 m, is the region’s mountaineering objective. An expedition lasts 3 to 4 days with a spare day for weather, and some operators run 7 to 8 days. It passes Altihut and the Bethlemi Hut (about 3,650 m), adds an acclimatisation walk toward 4,000 m, and ends with a summit push that begins near midnight and lasts roughly 10 to 14 hours. Glacier gear is mandatory: crampons, ice axe, harness, rope and helmet. Choose a certified guide, and plan for late June to September.
