The official Hanoi City Tour bus, run by Vietnam Tourism and Transerco, isn’t some knockoff operation, it’s the real double-decker circuit with 13 to 15 stops departing every 30 minutes: Hoan Kiem Lake, the Military History Museum, Thang Long Citadel, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake, the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison, and the Opera House among them. Multilingual audio guides run the whole time, so you get context even on the stops you don’t hop off for.
Passes come in three tiers: a 4-hour pass around 300,000 VND (about $12), a 24-hour pass around 450,000 VND (about $17), and a 48-hour option if you want to spread the stops across two days without re-buying. Hop off anywhere, explore on foot, and catch the next bus 30 minutes later; there’s no rush to see everything on the first pass.
Time it right
Rush hour in the Old Quarter turns even a double-decker bus into a slow crawl, so ride the morning or midday circuits when traffic actually moves. If the mausoleum is on your loop plan, remember it only opens 07:30 to 10:30 in summer or 08:00 to 11:00 in winter and is closed Mondays and Fridays entirely, so build your hop-off timing around that window rather than the bus schedule.
The airport connection nobody skips twice
Landing at Noi Bai International, ignore every driver who approaches you in the arrivals hall waving a fixed-fare offer; fake-liveried cars with rigged meters operate specifically on tourists who look jet-lagged and eager to leave. Book a GrabCar from inside the terminal on the airport Wi-Fi instead, or take the official Express Bus 86, which runs every 30 minutes straight to central Hanoi Station for 45,000 VND (about $1.70). Either beats negotiating with a tout at the curb.
