Beaches and Trails to Share on Lantau
The best couple activity on Lantau does not involve a reservation, a boat operator or an entry fee. It is putting on real shoes and walking up to Sunset Peak together before the light goes.
Sunset Peak, together, at golden hour
Starting from the Pak Kung Au pass, the climb to Sunset Peak’s 869-meter summit takes you through fields of golden silvergrass each autumn, ending with a sky that runs amber to violet over the scattered islands below. The ridge has virtually no shade for its entire length, so even a late-afternoon climb needs real water and sun protection, since the exposed granite keeps radiating heat well past the point the sun itself has lost its edge. This is a genuinely different hike than a casual stroll, and it rewards two people who pace each other rather than one person waiting at the top.
Cycling from Mui Wo to Silvermine Waterfall
Rent bikes at Mui Wo and ride past pastures where water buffalo graze, out to a two-tier waterfall and swimming pool with the old entrance to a 19th-century silver mine nearby. It is an easy 45 minutes each way on foot if cycling together feels like more coordination than the day calls for, and either way it ends at cafes like The Hideout or Village Bakery for coffee afterward.
A slower boat ride through Tai O
A shared motorized boat trip out of Tai O, priced around HK$30 to HK$50 per person, takes you into the Pearl River Estuary with a real chance of spotting wild pink dolphins from the water rather than a pier.
An afternoon at Cheung Sha
At three kilometers, Cheung Sha is Hong Kong’s longest beach, and its size is the actual point for a couple: there is enough sand that you are not stepping over another group’s towels every few meters, unlike the smaller, more social stretch at Pui O.
The verdict
Sunset Peak is worth the climb together if you are visiting between October and December for the silvergrass; outside that window, the boat and beach combination is the better use of a shared afternoon.
Start the Sunset Peak climb from Pak Kung Au with at least 90 minutes of daylight still ahead of you, since descending the loose stone steps in the dark is a genuinely different and more dangerous hike than climbing them.
