Belgrade Day Trips by Travel Time
The useful question for a day trip from Belgrade is how much of the day the journey will eat. Four destinations sit between 40 minutes and two hours away, and each fits a different kind of day.
Within the hour: Novi Sad and Smederevo
The Soko high-speed train runs from Belgrade’s Prokop and New Belgrade stations to Novi Sad. The quoted best time is 36 minutes, but timetables change, so plan for about 40 minutes to an hour and check srbijavoz.rs . Fares run roughly 550 to 680 RSD one way, depending on train type and reservation.
At Petrovaradin Fortress above the Danube, look for the clock whose hands are reversed: the long hand shows hours so boatmen could read it from the river. The EXIT music festival is held at the fortress in Novi Sad, not in Belgrade. Sremski Karlovci, a baroque wine town about 10 km further on, is known for Bermet, a spiced dessert wine. Smederevo lies 45 km south-east and takes about 50 minutes by car or bus. Its fortress, raised in 1428 to 1430 by Despot Đurađ Branković, has 25 towers around a triangular bailey and was the last medieval capital of Serbia.
Half a day each way: Oplenac
Oplenac is about 80 km south, near Topola, and takes around 1.5 hours by car. The church of Saint George was built by King Peter I and holds the Karadjordjević royal mausoleum. Its walls are covered with around 40 million small Murano glass tiles copying medieval frescoes. The royal cellars close by offer wine tastings. Keep your shoes on inside, cover shoulders and knees, and men should remove hats.
A full day: Golubac and the Iron Gate
Golubac Fortress stands about 130 km east on the Danube, roughly two hours by road. Ten towers drop to the water at the start of the Iron Gate gorge, and visitors can walk along restored paths. Lepenski Vir, a Mesolithic site dating from about 9500 to 6000 BC, is nearby and has distinctive carved stone heads.
