Escape Chiang Mai City for a Day
Chiang Mai’s mountains start where the city ends, which means a genuinely great day trip doesn’t cost you an early wake-up or a long haul. A few of the most-hyped ones, though, don’t actually fit in a day, so here’s the honest split.
Doi Inthanon: Thailand’s roof
Thailand’s highest peak, at 2,565m, is 100km south and about 1.5-2 hours by road. The Ang Ka cloud-forest boardwalk stays a crisp 10-15°C even when the city is baking, and the Twin Royal Pagodas (100 THB separate entry) plus the thundering Wachirathan Waterfall sit right off the main road. Park admission is 300 THB foreign adult, 150 THB child, plus a small vehicle fee. Want the Kew Mae Pan ridge trail too? It needs a mandatory Karen guide (200 THB per group) and closes entirely June 1 through October 31 for the rainy season. Bua Tong’s grippy waterfalls
Sixty kilometers north in Mae Taeng district, about 90 minutes each way, Bua Tong’s limestone tiers are coated in a mineral crust that grips bare feet like sandpaper, so scrambling straight up the cascade is safe for nearly anyone. Free entry after signing in at the ranger hut, open 08:00-17:00. This one pairs naturally with an elephant park visit since both sit in the same valley.
Ethical elephants, the right way
Elephant Nature Park runs entirely observation-only: watch rescued elephants forage, bathe themselves, and socialize from elevated platforms, no riding or scrubbing offered or accepted. A full day with a plant-based buffet lunch and transfer runs about 2,500 THB adult, 1,250 THB child, and fills up weeks in advance during the November-February high season, so book early.
Chiang Rai: doable, but know what you’re signing up for
The full run north to Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) is 180km and 3.5-4 hours each way, meaning 7-8 hours of driving for roughly 3.5 hours on the ground. Foreign admission is 100 THB, usually bundled with the free Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) and the 80 THB Baan Dam museum. Bo Sang, for a lighter half day
Ten kilometers east, the open-air umbrella workshops here are free to walk through, and a master painter will hand-paint a bag, phone case, or jacket while you watch for 100-250 THB. Three to four hours covers it comfortably, often paired with San Kamphaeng’s other craft workshops next door.
What doesn’t fit in a day
