Cologne Day Trips by Travel Time
Every worthwhile day trip out of Cologne is a train ride first, so the fastest way to choose one is by how long that ride actually takes rather than by the name of the town.
Under 20 minutes: Brühl
Regional trains RE5, RB26 and RB48 reach Brühl in 15 to 20 minutes. Schloss Augustusburg and the Falkenlust hunting lodge are a UNESCO-listed Rococo pair by Balthasar Neumann; the palace interiors run on timed, guided visits and close Mondays, so check hours before you go. Phantasialand, the theme park in the same town, is worth treating as its own separate full day rather than pairing it with the palaces, since the two don’t combine well in one visit.
20 to 30 minutes: Bonn
Regional RE and RB trains cover Bonn in 20 to 26 minutes for roughly €8 to €9 under the Rheinlandtarif. Beethoven-Haus, the composer’s birthplace, runs around €10 for adults, and the Haus der Geschichte on the Museumsmeile is free. The old town and university campus are an easy add-on walk from either.
30 to 40 minutes: Aachen or Düsseldorf
Aachen is 33 to 36 minutes by ICE, or 60 to 70 minutes on the slower regional RE1/RE9. Charlemagne’s imperial cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, holds his marble throne and shrine; guided tours of the throne room and chapel are ticketed separately from general entry. In the other direction, Düsseldorf is 20 to 25 minutes by ICE or RE, with its Altstadt breweries and the Frank Gehry buildings at MedienHafen.
40 to 50 minutes: the Siebengebirge
Königswinter, reached in 35 to 50 minutes by train, is the gateway to the Siebengebirge hills and the Drachenfels ruins, accessible either by a marked hiking trail or the Drachenfelsbahn cog railway. This is genuinely outside Cologne’s own city limits, which sits entirely on the flat Rhine plain.
Booking and getting there
A Deutschland-Ticket at €63 a month covers all the regional trains above and pays for itself once you’re taking more than one or two day trips in a visit; for a single trip, a Rheinlandtarif single fare or day ticket is cheaper. Compare hotel rates in Cologne on Booking.com if you’re basing multiple day trips out of the same stay.
Practical tips
Buy tickets before boarding where the platform machine allows it, and build in a buffer at the Cologne Hauptbahnhof end, since regional trains from several directions share the same platforms at peak times. For a plan that strings two or more of these day trips together with city time in between, see the multi-day trips guide for Cologne .
The verdict: if you only have one day trip in the schedule, Bonn’s 20-minute ride gives the best return for the least travel time, with Aachen the better pick if a UNESCO cathedral matters more than a short commute.
