Gdańsk Day Trips by Season
A day trip from Gdańsk in July and the same trip in November are two different outings. Prices, boats and opening hours all follow the season, so pick the trip by the month.
Spring and summer, April to September
Malbork Castle is at its fullest. The 2026 spring-summer tariff ran from 25 April to 30 September, with a Historical route at 80 PLN regular and 60 PLN reduced and a Grounds route at 35 PLN and 25 PLN. Trains leave Gdańsk Główny about every 30 minutes and take about half an hour, and the castle is a flat walk from Malbork station. Sopot is 20 minutes by SKM for about 6.50 PLN. Its wooden pier charges only from 10 April to 30 September: 10 PLN for adults, 5 PLN for children 3 to 16, 8 PLN for seniors 70 and over, and under-3s go free. From 27 June to 31 August it opens round the clock. Tariffs are on mosirsopot.pl .
Hel is the long day. The peninsula is about 100 km away, and the drive or the train takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way. In summer a water tram from the Długie Pobrzeże quay takes about 1 hour 50 minutes, with fares reported near 30 PLN regular and 18 PLN reduced; confirm times and fares with Żegluga Gdańska . The seal sanctuary at the Marine Station in Hel feeds its seals four times a day in July and August, at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30, and opens 10:00-18:00.
Autumn and winter, October to March
The pier at Sopot is free from 1 October, so the beach, the Monciak boulevard and the Crooked House make an easy low-cost afternoon. Gdynia, 35 minutes from Gdańsk Główny on the SKM at roughly 9 to 10 PLN, works in any weather. Its Emigration Museum is inside the 1933 Marine Transit Terminal, and the long southern pier is a walk for a dry day. Buy SKM tickets on a mobile app, at a station machine or ticket office, or from the conductor. The old stamp-it-yourself paper tickets were withdrawn on 1 January 2026.
Malbork keeps running all year. The autumn and winter tariff applies from 1 October, and Monday admits visitors free to the grounds only. Check the current prices on the castle site before you go.
Hel is possible in winter by rail. The seal sanctuary opens 10:00-16:00 from October to April with feedings at 11:00 and 14:00, and the details are at fokarium.ug.edu.pl . Dress for wind on the sandbar, and if you prefer a guided day, search Hel peninsula tours on Viator for transport included. Winter days are short, so plan the return train before you set out.
Westerplatte
The peninsula where the war began in September 1939 is a fenced construction site while a new museum is built. The monument walk and visitor centre can still be reached by bus 106. The new museum is planned to open in the second half of 2027 or later, so look at muzeum1939.pl before travelling out.
The verdict
Choose Malbork from late April to September when the two routes give you a choice, and Gdynia from October to March. Treat Hel as a full day in either half.
Before you go
