Ghana Day Trips by Transport Type
Day trips in Ghana, by how you travel
In Ghana the way you travel matters more than the destination. A private driver gives you a flexible, early start. An intercity coach is cheap but follows a timetable. A flight changes the map entirely. Prices are in Ghana cedis (GH₵), about 11.7 to the US dollar in early October 2026, and they move.
With a private car and driver
Within about an hour of Accra, a hired car makes three easy outings. Aburi Botanical Gardens, founded in 1890, climb the cooler Akuapem ridge about 35 km north; entry is about GH₵20, and the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm at Mampong is nearby for about GH₵30. Shai Hills Resource Reserve, 50 km north-east, has granite hills, olive baboons, kob antelope and caves; adults pay GH₵70 and a vehicle GH₵20. Early departures beat the worst of Accra’s traffic, which can turn 15 km into a two-hour crawl.
Kakum National Park is the stretch. Visitghana.com puts it around 4 hours from Accra, so a same-day return means leaving by about 06:00. A chauffeured car or van for the day is commonly quoted at GH₵1,500 to GH₵2,200 per vehicle. The walkway has 7 bridges over 333 m, rises up to 27 m, and opens 06:00 to 16:00 daily; check the fee at the gate. See visitghana.com .
Cape Coast Castle, a slave-trade site and UNESCO World Heritage listing, lies about 33 km south of Kakum. Foreign adults pay about GH₵80, which includes a guided tour; confirm the price at the gate through gmmb.gov.gh . Allow quiet time and modest dress.
By intercity coach
Intercity STC runs air-conditioned coaches from Accra to Cape Coast in 3.5 to 4.5 hours for about GH₵90 to GH₵130, and to Kumasi in 4.5 to 6.5 hours for about GH₵120 to GH₵160. Timetables are at stc.gov.gh . That makes Cape Coast an overnight stop rather than a day trip. Tro-tro minibuses are cheaper still but often lack seatbelts, so coaches suit long hauls.
From Kumasi, Lake Bosomtwe is about 30 km south-east and an hour away by taxi. The crater lake is roughly 8 km across and sacred to the Ashanti, whose fishermen paddle wooden boats with planks. Lakeside lodges serve long lunches.
By air
Mole National Park is never a day trip from Accra, at about 690 km and 10 hours by road. The workable version starts in Tamale. Fly Accra to Tamale in about an hour on flyafricaworld.com , then drive about 2.5 hours west. Foreign adult entry is GH₵60 and a guided walk costs GH₵20 per person per hour, with armed rangers and a safe distance from elephants. Most visitors stay a night. The US government advises reconsidering travel to parts of northern Ghana, including areas of the Savannah Region, so read the US advisory and the UK FCDO guidance for Ghana before you go.
Health, paperwork and money
UK and US passport holders need a visa from the official portal at evisa.immigration.gov.gh ; check the portal for the current fee. Bring your yellow fever certificate: if you cannot show one, you may be refused entry or vaccinated on arrival. Take malaria advice before you fly. Pay in cedis cash at gates; mobile money is common, and cards work mainly in larger Accra hotels.

Verdict: pick Aburi plus Shai Hills for a car day near Accra, and treat Kakum and Mole as overnight trips. The activities overview ranks them by effort.
