Dubrovnik for Two, at Your Pace

Some couples want an empty street at 06:30 and a quiet table. Others want music, a bar on the rocks and a late finish. Dubrovnik handles both, and the choice mostly comes down to the hour of the day and the time of year.

The quiet version

Stradun at dawn. Before the first delivery vans and tour groups, the limestone is almost empty and the church bells carry. Coffee afterwards is easier than at any other hour.

A Lokrum morning. Take an early boat from the Old Port, when the paths under the pines are quiet and the peacocks have the garden to themselves. The €30 ticket includes the return boat, and the island is closed from mid-December to February; sailings are on lokrum.hr .

A peka dinner for two. Meat or octopus is slow-roasted under an iron bell in embers, and it needs about three hours of notice. Expect to pay roughly €50 to €85 for two.

The lively version

Cable car at dusk. The €30 return gets you to the summit for the sunset. In early October it runs until 21:00, and in summer much later. It stops from December to March, so see the cable car timetable .

Drinks at Buža. Two small bars perch on the rocks outside the southern walls, with drinks around €8 to €14 and cash reported as the norm. Swim only in calm water, use the ladders, and skip any jumping from the cliff. Cover up between the bar and the Old Town gate, since swimwear in town draws on-the-spot fines.

Summer theatre at Lovrijenac. The Midsummer Scene stages one English-language Shakespeare play at the fort each year between June and early July. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival fills July and August with concerts and theatre; programmes are on visitdubrovnik.hr .

A Michelin-starred table. Restaurant 360 sits on the walls above the Old Port and holds a star. Book well ahead and confirm opening days and prices with the restaurant directly.

December lights. The Winter Festival strings lights along Stradun, with market stalls, hot wine and open-air concerts on Town Hall Square. The cable car and Lokrum are closed then, so the evenings are the draw.
