Day 1: Arrival and Old Town Orientation

  • Land at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), about 20km southeast near Cilipi. Take the Platanus airport shuttle bus (EUR 8 one-way, timed to flights, running to Gruz and on to Pile or Ploce Gate) or the cheaper Libertas line 11 city bus (roughly EUR 4), rather than an unmetered taxi you’d need to haggle over
  • Check in to your Old Town or Ploce accommodation, both put you inside walking distance of everything on Day 2
  • Walk the full length of Stradun, the polished-limestone promenade rebuilt in Baroque style after the 1667 earthquake, from Pile Gate to the Bell Tower at the eastern end, about 300 metres and ten minutes if the crowds allow it
  • Photograph Pile Gate itself and step inside the Cathedral of the Assumption for a look at its Baroque dome and treasury, without committing to the full paid tour yet
  • Dinner at a side-street spot two or three streets back from Stradun, where the quality-to-price ratio genuinely improves, D’vino Wine Bar on Palmoticeva Street is a reliable pick for Croatian wine and small plates
  • Close the night with an unhurried lap of the Old Town’s back alleys once the day-trip crowds have cleared out

Day 2: The City Walls and Fort Lovrijenac

  • Be at Pile Gate at opening, roughly 8am, City Walls tickets run EUR 40 adult in peak season (EUR 15 in winter); walking the full 1.9-2km circuit before the cruise crowds arrive is the single best timing decision you’ll make all trip. Book a skip-the-line ticket for June-September dates, when walk-up queues run 60-90 minutes, and check current pricing at citywallsdubrovnik.hr
  • Your Walls ticket includes Fort Lovrijenac free for three days, the clifftop fortress just outside the western walls and a genuine Game of Thrones filming location, don’t pay its EUR 15 standalone price separately
  • Afternoon at the Rector’s Palace, the Gothic-Renaissance former seat of the Ragusan Republic’s elected rector, now the Cultural History Museum, EUR 15 adult, included if you’ve bought the Dubrovnik City Pass instead of a single Walls ticket
  • Late afternoon at Banje Beach, just east of the walls with a view straight back at Fort Revelin, free to enter with a paid loungers section if you want one
  • Dinner back in the Old Town, or cross to Ploce for a quieter, less touristy table with the same views

Day 3: Lokrum Island

  • Morning ferry from the Old Port (not Gruz, a separate harbour entirely) to Lokrum Island, 15 minutes each way, boats every 15-30 minutes in season between roughly 9am and 7pm; the combined boat-and-reserve-entry ticket runs about EUR 30 adult, EUR 5 ages 7-18, sold at the pier same-day
  • Spend the day among Lokrum’s botanical garden, free-roaming peacocks, the ruined Benedictine monastery, and the saltwater lagoon locals call the Dead Sea, genuinely quieter than the mainland for most of the day
  • Find the small Iron Throne replica if the Game of Thrones connection matters to you, it’s a minor prop stop, not the island’s real draw
  • Bring your own lunch or eat at the one restaurant near the ferry dock, options thin out fast once you’re away from the landing point
  • Return to the Old Town by early evening for dinner, the island’s ferries stop running well before dark

Things to Know

  • Croatia’s currency is the euro, not the kuna, since 1 January 2023; any kuna price you see quoted is stale
  • The Old Town is entirely pedestrian, car-free, and genuinely hilly outside the flat Stradun spine, pack shoes that can handle stairs
  • Cruise ships dock most days April-October and can multiply the Old Town’s daytime population several times over between roughly 10am and 4pm, plan the Walls around it, not the calendar
  • Check the day’s cruise schedule and current visitor updates at tzdubrovnik.hr before you plan the Walls or Lokrum

Transportation

  • Libertas city buses connect the Old Town to Lapad, Babin Kuk, and Gruz for roughly EUR 1.73 bought at a kiosk in advance, valid about an hour for transfers
  • No train service reaches Dubrovnik at all, bus and boat are the only public transit options in or out
  • Lokrum ferries leave from the Old Port, a small dock inside the Old Town walls, entirely separate from Gruz, the main cruise and ferry harbour further northwest

  • Book the City Walls skip-the-line ticket and confirm your hotel a few weeks ahead for June-September travel, both genuinely sell out
  • Get to the Old Port for one of the first Lokrum boats in peak season, the island stays noticeably quieter early
  • Extending past three days? The 4-day itinerary adds the Srdj cable car and a Game of Thrones tour without changing anything else in this plan

Confirm your Walls ticket time and check the day’s cruise schedule before you land, three days leaves just enough slack to swap Lokrum and the Walls if one day turns out busier than expected.
