3 Days in Dubrovnik: Day-Trip Base Itinerary

Three days adds the marquee cross-border trip, Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor, to the Elaphiti Islands day out. It’s the shortest version of this itinerary that fits a real international border crossing in without turning the whole trip into one long transfer. Shorter trip? Drop to the 2-day version . Day 1: Arrival and Dubrovnik orientation

  • Land at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), roughly 15.5-20km southeast near Cilipi. Take the Platanus airport shuttle bus (EUR 8 one-way, timed to flights) or the cheaper Libertas line 11 city bus (roughly EUR 4)
  • Check into your base for all three nights, Old Town, Ploce, or Lapad, this itinerary uses one hotel the whole trip
  • Walk Stradun, Pile Gate to the Bell Tower, and get your bearings; save the full City Walls circuit for a dedicated city trip, covered in our Dubrovnik travel guide
  • Dinner on a side street back from Stradun, then an early night, tomorrow’s an early boat and Day 3 is an early border crossing

Day 2: Elaphiti Islands

  • Morning departure from the Old Port (not Gruz) for Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan. Public ferry lines 807/831 run about EUR 5 each way but thin out fast outside July and August; an organized three-island tour (EUR 30-75+pp, often with lunch and swim stops) is the easier call
  • Swim and wander whichever islands your boat stops at, Lopud’s sandy beach and Šipan’s olive groves are the most requested stops
  • Back in Dubrovnik by early evening, check ferry timetables at jadrolinija.hr if going independently, and turn in early for tomorrow’s border crossing

Day 3: Montenegro, Kotor and Perast

  • Early start, ideally the first available departure (~7-7:15am), for the drive south to the Karasovići/Debeli Brijeg border; passport required, no exceptions, Montenegro isn’t in Schengen even though it borders EU member Croatia
  • Organized tours run roughly EUR 30-68pp for transport, guide, and stops in Kotor and Perast; independent bus runs EUR 25-33 one-way from Gruz
  • Walk Kotor’s Old Town walls and fortress climb (~EUR 15, free November-April), and take the short boat to Our Lady of the Rocks off Perast if your tour includes it (sometimes a EUR 5-10 add-on)
  • Border wait swings hard by time of day, 10-20 minutes early or late, multiple hours at peak summer midday, budget the whole day around it rather than a fixed 2-hour transit estimate
  • Late return to Dubrovnik and a quiet dinner, three days is enough to close the trip here without rushing

Is 3 days enough for a Dubrovnik day-trip base?

Enough for one island day and one cross-border day, Montenegro, without feeling rushed on either. Not enough to add Mostar’s Old Bridge in the same trip, that needs its own full day covered in the 4-day itinerary .

How much does this 3-day Dubrovnik trip cost?

Budget roughly EUR 70-100 a day (~USD 75-108) for a mid-range hotel and meals, plus EUR 30-75pp for the Elaphiti tour and EUR 30-68pp for the Montenegro day trip, more if you book a private car instead of a shared group tour.

Things to know

  • Croatia’s currency is the euro, not the kuna, since 1 January 2023, and Montenegro uses the euro too despite not being in the EU or Schengen
  • Carry a passport for Day 3, this is a genuine international border crossing, not an EU-internal hop
  • Elaphiti ferries leave from the Old Port, entirely separate from Gruz, the main cruise and ferry harbour further northwest

  • Book the Montenegro tour’s earliest departure slot, both the border queue and the tour bus itself fill up faster later in the day
